The Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs 264 crore to establish 65 dedicated Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) police stations. This initiative, spearheaded by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, aims to reinforce the state’s campaign against drug-related crime as part of fulfilling a key election pledge. A Government Order issued on August 8 outlines the establishment of these specialised units, which will operate throughout the state addressing narcotics-related offences exclusively.

Of the total funding, around Rs 245.99 crore is designated for recurring operational costs, while the remainder is set aside for non-recurring expenses. The establishment of these police stations reflects a focused commitment towards enhancing law enforcement capabilities in Tamil Nadu.

Structure and Distribution of Police Stations

The 65 ANTF police stations will be strategically positioned, with 37 dedicated to covering individual districts and 28 stationed within the nine city Commissionerates. Chennai is set to receive the most units, comprising twelve stations, while others like Avadi, Tambaram, Salem, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, and Tirunelveli will each host two stations.

Each of these field units will be staffed with one Inspector, four Sub-Inspectors, and twenty police personnel, amounting to a total of 65 Inspector roles, 260 Sub-Inspector positions, and 1,300 police officers dedicated to the task force. The Government Order emphasises that the personnel assigned to the ANTF are not to be redirected for unrelated duties, thereby ensuring focused efforts on narcotics enforcement.

In support of these measures, a specialised headquarters will be established under the oversight of an Additional Director General of Police (ADGP). This headquarters will accommodate 454 personnel and will include ten specialised wings that handle crucial areas such as operations, cybercrime, intelligence, and training.

Operational Strategies and Goals

The newly formed units are tasked with collecting intelligence on narcotics trafficking, conducting cyber-surveillance, and both registering and investigating drug-related crimes. A significant aspect of their mandate includes conducting financial investigations aimed at identifying and seizing both movable and immovable assets linked to drug trafficking enterprises.

To enhance their operational capacity, the government has also sanctioned the procurement of 67 four-wheelers and 325 two-wheelers for the task force’s mobility needs. This logistical support is essential for effective policing across varied terrains and urban settings.

Beyond law enforcement, the initiative reflects a broader commitment to addressing the drug crisis in Tamil Nadu. The Health and Family Welfare Department will collaborate on rehabilitation efforts and strategies to lessen drug dependence. Additionally, local educational and sports agencies, along with community organisations, will conduct awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about the dangers of drug use.

Commitment to a Drug-Free Tamil Nadu

This strategy aligns with Chief Minister Vijay’s election commitment to create a “Drug-Free Tamil Nadu.” During the first joint meeting of district collectors and police chiefs post the administration’s inauguration in May, he directed officials to intensify measures against drug trafficking, organised crime, and illegal sand mining. Authorities were urged to focus on the root causes of crime rather than merely addressing incidents after they occur.

As part of the government’s awareness initiatives, Chief Minister Vijay participated in a six-kilometre anti-drug marathon alongside thousands of citizens. He encouraged participants to take an anti-drug pledge, promoting the importance of staying away from narcotics and supporting those struggling with substance abuse issues.

This multi-faceted approach reflects the Tamil Nadu government’s resolve to mitigate the drug menace while fostering community participation in the effort to combat substance abuse effectively.
