The CSR Journal Magazine

On May 14, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar articulated the perspective that the BRICS grouping is poised to play a “constructive, stabilising role” in a world facing significant shifts in international relations. Speaking at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, he underscored that the global landscape is currently influenced by multiple ongoing conflicts, economic uncertainties, and challenges related to trade, technology, and climate governance.

Jaishankar pointed out that ongoing conflicts are reshaping international interactions, reflecting both challenges and expectations for emerging economies. He emphasised that the focus on peace and security is essential, particularly in the context of prevailing terrorism issues, which create a need for enhanced diplomatic efforts and dialogue.

“The importance of dialogue and diplomacy in the context of peace and security cannot be overstated,” Jaishankar noted. “There is a considerable expectation, especially from developing nations, that BRICS will be instrumental in creating stability amid these tumultuous times.” He stated that the discussions held during the meeting present an opportunity to evaluate both global and regional developments.

Development Challenges and Economic Resilience Highlighted

Jaishankar also addressed the pressing development challenges faced by many nations, particularly regarding energy, food security, availability of fertilisers, health systems, and access to finance. He reiterated the importance of ensuring economic resilience, mentioning that stable supply chains and market diversification are critical for sustaining growth on a global scale.

“Many member countries are grappling with energy and food security issues, alongside challenges related to health and finance,” he stated. “BRICS can provide a platform for these nations to respond more effectively to their developmental needs.” He urged a dual focus on both economic stability and the development of reliable supply chains.

The minister’s remarks underscore the reality that development remains a core concern, as many countries continue to seek effective solutions in these pressing areas. This sets a crucial context for BRICS as it continues to evolve its role in global socio-economic dynamics.

Climate Change and Technological Advancements Discussed

Climate change emerged as a significant topic during Jaishankar’s address, with the minister stressing its urgency as a global challenge. He advocated for discussions that advance sustainable development, while adhering to principles of equity and differentiated responsibilities among nations.

“Effective measures against climate change must promote sustainable development while respecting international obligations,” he said, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach among member states to drive meaningful progress.

Moreover, Jaishankar noted that rapid technological advancements are continuously altering the global landscape. He remarked that these changes should be leveraged to promote inclusive growth and effective governance, thus ensuring that the benefits of innovation reach all sectors of society.

The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, running from May 14 to May 15, aims to bolster coordination among member states in addressing global economic governance, development priorities, and geopolitical challenges. India, which assumed the BRICS Chairmanship on January 1, has hosted this influential bloc for the fourth time, having previously held the presidency in 2012, 2016, and 2021.
