BJP’s Debasis Ojha’s Poll Agent Biswajit Mandal Allegedly Attacked in West Bengal’s Birbhum

The CSR Journal Magazine

BJP candidate Debasis Ojha’s election agent, Biswajit Mandal, was reportedly assaulted on April 23, in Birbhum, West Bengal. He alleged that a large mob, estimated to be between 100 to 150 individuals, attacked him after he arrived to address a local land dispute. Mandal asserted that the group vandalised his vehicle before pulling him from the car and assaulting him with sticks and stones, resulting in injuries, including a head wound.

Speaking to ANI, Mandal recounted his harrowing experience, stating that he had rushed to Ojha’s locality upon receiving alarming reports. According to him, upon arrival, he was surrounded and targeted by the mob. He also indicated that another BJP supporter who was present with him sustained injuries to his arm and head during the incident. Furthermore, Mandal claimed he attempted to contact law enforcement and document the episode through video but did not receive any assistance.

He managed to escape with significant effort, ultimately receiving help from the BJP, who expedited his admission to a hospital for treatment.

Political Reactions and Condemnations

Following the incident, Uday Shankar Banerjee, the BJP’s Birbhum district president, condemned the violence, labelling Labpur a sensitive area. He demanded immediate administrative action, stating that the situation was exacerbated by the alleged involvement of local officials. Banerjee specifically called for the suspension of relevant authorities, pointing fingers at the local police station officer for purported collusion with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party.

Banerjee addressed the media, expressing concern over the safety and security of BJP members in the region. He emphasised the need for accountability, suggesting that the ongoing political turmoil has fostered an environment of intimidation against opposition party members.

The incident has heightened tensions between BJP and TMC, with BJP leaders accusing the administration of bias, which they argue undermines the democratic process during the assembly elections.

Additional Incidents of Violence Reported

This is not an isolated incident. Earlier the same day, another BJP candidate, Subhendu Sarkar from the Kumarganj constituency, reported being attacked by TMC members while assessing the situation at a polling booth. Sarkar claimed that his vehicle was vandalised and he sustained injuries during the assault. He stated that multiple polling agents were reportedly intimidated and forcibly removed from their posts.

Sarkar expressed dissatisfaction with the response of the Central forces deployed in the area, alleging their absence during the attacks despite their presence at the station. He characterised the TMC’s actions as attempts to instil fear and disrupt the electoral process.

He remarked that the ongoing political rivalry is characterised by rising tensions, with accusations flying between the two parties as they vie for control in West Bengal’s assembly elections. This charged atmosphere is compounded by previous allegations of electoral misconduct and violence in various parts of the state.

Political Climate in West Bengal

The current political landscape in West Bengal is marked by fierce competition between the ruling TMC and the BJP as the state heads towards the crucial assembly elections. With a total of 294 seats, achieving a majority of 148 remains imperative for both parties. As the campaigns proceed toward the final voting phases, incidents of violence and allegations of misconduct have become increasingly prominent.

Both parties have heightened their activities in recent weeks, motivated by the importance of securing support in this highly contested environment. As tensions escalate, the focus remains on ensuring a fair and peaceful electoral process for the voters of West Bengal.
