Bihar’s ‘Snake Lady’ Successfully Rescues 10-Foot Cobra from Home

The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant event unfolded in Valmikinagar, Bihar, when a 10-foot king cobra entered a resident’s home, causing panic among the family. The household, led by Munni Lal, immediately sought help from the local community, prompting a swift response. Upon the notification of the snake’s presence, neighbours gathered outside as the reptile remained inside the residence, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Janaki Devi’s Expertise Leads to Safe Rescue

The renowned snake rescuer, Janaki Devi, popularly referred to as the region’s ‘Snake Lady’, arrived at the scene with remarkable speed. She possesses years of experience in handling snakes, which proved pivotal in managing the delicate situation. With her skills, Janaki was able to safely capture the 10-foot king cobra while ensuring the safety of both the animal and the gathering crowd.

Local wildlife officials confirm that such encounters with snakes tend to spike during monsoon seasons and periods of climate change. According to Forest Ranger Satyam Kumar, these shifts compel snakes to leave their natural habitats and seek refuge in human dwellings, particularly in villages adjacent to the Valmiki Tiger Reserve, which are often at higher risk of such incidents.

Emphasising Safety and Wildlife Preservation

The authorities encourage residents to refrain from attempting to handle snakes themselves, as this can lead to dangerous situations. Instead, they recommend contacting the forest department or trained rescue teams, who are adequately equipped to manage such scenarios. Acknowledging the unpredictable nature of wildlife, officials stress the significance of immediate action in ensuring safety for both the community and the animals.

The king cobra is noted as the longest venomous snake globally and poses significant danger due to its potent neurotoxic venom. In the event of a bite, it is imperative to seek prompt medical assistance to mitigate the potentially life-threatening effects on the nervous system.

Janaki Devi has gained widespread recognition for her tireless commitment to wildlife rescue. Her dedication has resulted in the safe capture of thousands of dangerous snakes throughout her career, which began when she was just 12 years old. Despite facing risks, including multiple snake bites during her operations, she remains devoted to answering calls for assistance from residents, tirelessly working toward preserving the balance between human occupants and local wildlife.
