Bengaluru Clears 202 Km of Footpath Encroachments in Three-Day Civic Drive

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Karnataka government’s Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has successfully addressed issues surrounding footpath encroachments by clearing over 202 km of pathways in Bengaluru within a span of three days. This initiative was part of the Safe Footpath Campaign, aimed at reclaiming valuable pedestrian spaces throughout the city. The operation, described as one of the largest endeavours in recent times, targeted various arterial and sub-arterial roads across all five city corporations.

Details of the Clearance Operation

According to official records, the civic authorities removed encroachments from a total of 76.55 km of footpaths on July 1, followed by another 64.55 km on July 2, and concluding with 61.60 km on July 3. This systematic approach led to a total length of cleared paths reaching 202.70 km. The main targets of the campaign included unauthorised structures, roadside stalls, temporary kiosks, and other obstructions that had previously restricted pedestrian access, thereby forcing individuals to navigate busy roads.

The operation was particularly noteworthy for the levels of coordination among civic teams, who managed activities across different zones of the city. These efforts ensured the restoration of unimpeded access for pedestrians. Authorities stressed the importance of footpaths as essential public spaces that must be maintained free from illegal occupancies, enhancing overall safety while encouraging safer mobility for residents.

In the first two days of the campaign, Bengaluru West observed the highest rate of clearance, while Bengaluru North registered significant progress on the final day. This accomplishment underscored the goal of the initiative to enhance pedestrian safety and public access across various neighbourhoods in Bengaluru.

Future Steps and Continuing Efforts

The GBA has indicated that the Safe Footpath Campaign is set to extend into other areas of the city in the upcoming weeks. Officials aim to keep pathways accessible to all users, particularly supporting the needs of senior citizens, children, and persons with disabilities. Enhancing walkability is a primary focus, as efforts are made to rejuvenate public spaces that support pedestrian activities.

In line with this ongoing campaign, the state government has announced plans for a comprehensive footpath policy. This new framework is designed to prevent further encroachments, regulate vending activities, and create safer environments for pedestrians. With Bengaluru facing increased urbanisation and pressure on its civic infrastructure, the government is placing significant emphasis on pedestrian-friendly planning as a critical element of urban development.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to improving civil infrastructure and prioritising the safety and accessibility of public walkways. The initiative aligns with broader state efforts aimed at responding to the city’s rapid growth and evolving urban landscape. As these projects roll out, stakeholders will continue to focus on fostering an environment that supports safe walking conditions across Bengaluru.
