‘Bengal Is Back on Track’: Railways Minister Hails Suvendu Adhikari

The CSR Journal Magazine

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently commended West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for his election win, which he believes has “saved Bengal” from the previous administration led by the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Vaishnaw attributed delays in essential infrastructure projects to the former government and, during his visit to Kolkata on Saturday, referenced significant advancements in railway initiatives as a result of this political shift. He indicated that projects exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore are currently in progress across the state.

During his remarks, Vaishnaw expressed gratitude to Adhikari, stating, “Congratulations on the way you have saved Bengal. Now you can work.” This statement highlights the optimism regarding the current government’s ability to enhance development in the region, which had reportedly stalled under previous governance.

Collaborative Efforts to Accelerate Projects

In the wake of this praise, Suvendu Adhikari confirmed that his administration intends to closely collaborate with the Union government to expedite railway projects that have been awaiting execution. He attributed the current administrative challenges in Centre-state relations to the policies of the erstwhile TMC government, which he claimed complicated interactions with the Centre.

Adhikari announced that the state would provide land to the Railways, similar to the land allocated to the Border Security Force (BSF) for enhancing border security. This indicative shift towards support for railway infrastructure reflects the new government’s focus on promptly addressing critical infrastructure needs, including land for various projects throughout West Bengal.

Moreover, in its inaugural Cabinet meeting in May, the BJP-led government initiated plans to transfer 600 acres to the BSF to fortify security measures along the porous Bangladesh border. This action was part of the BJP’s broader commitment to address national security and improve regional infrastructure.

Future Developments in Kolkata Metro

During his address, Vaishnaw elaborated on impending advancements for Kolkata Metro, noting that the service is set to receive sixty new-generation trains over the next five years. This upgrade aligns with the government’s strategy to modernise and expand public transport systems within the city, which serves as a critical transit route for many residents.

Additionally, the Minister informed that a total of 102 stations in Bengal would undergo redevelopment as part of the Amrit Bharat scheme. This initiative aims to enhance the quality and accessibility of rail infrastructure, fostering an improved commuter experience across the state.

It is significant to mention that Kolkata Metro remains the only rapid transit system in India that is fully controlled by the Railways, further reinforcing the importance of these upgrades. Vaishnaw’s comments also included critiques of the former TMC administration, claiming that several railway and metro projects were impeded by legal challenges stemming from the TMC government’s actions.

He referred specifically to the Chingrighata metro project, which faced numerous delays due to such issues, remarking that “projects valued at approximately Rs 1.02 lakh crore have been pending implementation for an extended period.” This commentary underscores the ongoing transition in policies and the renewed focus on operational efficiency within West Bengal’s transport framework.
