Bangladesh-China Ties Strengthen After Prime Minister’s China Visit

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Khalilur Rahman, announced that the diplomatic relationship between Dhaka and Beijing has attained its highest level following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China. This statement was made during a press conference held on June 27, 2026, just after the Prime Minister returned from a five-day trip to Beijing.

Rahman characterised the visit as a significant enhancement of Bangladesh’s ties with China, indicating a major advancement in bilateral engagement. He emphasised that this development highlights Bangladesh’s increasing strategic importance in China’s regional diplomatic framework.

Throughout his trip, Rahman engaged in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and conducted bilateral talks with Premier Li Qiang. The minister expressed optimism about the outcomes of these meetings and their potential implications for future cooperation between the two nations.

Strategic Dialogue and Infrastructure Initiatives

During the talks, the two countries agreed to institutionalise a strategic dialogue at the level of foreign ministers and initiate a “2+2” dialogue mechanism that encompasses diplomacy and defence aspects. This reflects a deeper engagement in crucial areas of bilateral relations.

Furthermore, both sides reiterated their commitment to enhancing cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. This initiative focuses on significant infrastructure projects and people-centric development schemes aimed at promoting mutual growth and improvement in living standards.

Rahman noted that progress had been made on the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project. China has pledged its support for this initiative, and both parties have consented to accelerate the feasibility study for the project. The Teesta River is critical to the livelihoods of millions, flowing from the eastern Himalayas through Sikkim and West Bengal before entering Bangladesh.

Projects and Agreements Signed During the Visit

The visit led to agreements on several key projects, including the Mongla Port Modernisation and Expansion Project and the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone Development Project in Chattogram. These initiatives are expected to further bolster economic cooperation between the two countries.

In total, Bangladesh and China signed eight memorandums of understanding, three agreements, one protocol, and one Joint Action Plan. These documents cover various areas, such as development cooperation, human resource development, agriculture, education, and trade and investment, which signify a comprehensive approach to partnership expansion.

Before his trip to China, Prime Minister Rahman had visited Malaysia on June 21, marking his first foreign excursion since taking office. During the visit, Xi expressed China’s backing for Bangladesh in matters of sovereignty and its stance against foreign interference, rounding off a trip that Dhaka has termed a substantial advancement in bilateral relations.
