Young Start-Ups Propel India’s Indigenous Drone and Radar Development

India’s initiative for technological self-sufficiency is rapidly advancing, particularly in the fields of drone and radar systems. This movement is primarily driven by young deep-tech start-ups that are creating indigenous technologies for various applications, including defence, logistics, agriculture, and disaster management. The current landscape showcases a significant change in India’s approach to technology, with a focus on developing essential hardware and software locally, rather than relying on imports.

EndureAir’s Innovations in Drone Technology

Located in Greater Noida, EndureAir, a deep-tech start-up, is at the forefront of advancing drone and aerial robotics tailored to India’s unique geographical challenges. Rama Krishnan, the CEO and co-founder, underscored the complexity of India’s terrain, which includes high-altitude regions, maritime borders, and deserts. He emphasised that solutions tailored to India’s operational requirements are crucial, as international technologies may not fully meet these needs.

EndureAir is developing both hardware and software in-house, ensuring that the technologies cater specifically to local conditions. One of their flagship products, the SABAL-20, is a tactical logistics drone designed for challenging environments. With a payload capacity of approximately 20 kg, it can operate for nearly 40 minutes and has a range of about 10 km. The drone features a unique variable-pitch technology that enhances stability and lift, especially during difficult missions.

Ishika, a drone pilot at EndureAir, highlighted the advantages of their larger blade design, which facilitates superior airflow and lift, making it more efficient than smaller multi-rotor alternatives. This focus on enhancing drone capabilities aligns well with the growing demands in various sectors.

SisIR Radar’s Groundbreaking SAR Technology

In Kolkata, SisIR Radar is making advancements in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology. Founded by former ISRO scientist Tapan Misra, the start-up aims to create radar systems suited for drones, aircraft, and satellites. Unlike traditional optical imaging, SAR technology is capable of producing images under various challenging conditions like clouds, fog, or darkness, thereby serving critical needs in defence, agriculture, and emergency management.

Misra reported that the company is focusing on developing low-frequency SAR systems for drones, alongside high-resolution radar systems for satellites. Their L-band satellite radar promises approximately two metres of resolution, significantly surpassing the existing global standard of about 10 metres. This development highlights SisIR Radar’s commitment to achieving higher precision in radar imaging.

Additionally, SisIR Radar is innovating with reusable and reconfigurable radar hardware that can adapt to diverse missions through software modifications. Scientist Mehali Pahadi mentioned that their approach allows a single hardware platform to be versatile enough for multiple applications, enhancing operational efficiency.

Focus on National Security and Operational Needs

Innovation at SisIR Radar extends to their software, ‘Trinetra’, which simplifies the interpretation and usage of radar data, particularly for defence-related purposes. Abhishek Roy Chowdhury, Vice President at SisIR, noted that their core product offerings include L-band and P-band SAR systems capable of delivering sub-metre resolution data, which is notably finer than the roughly 10-metre resolution standard from available public datasets.

The advancements made by companies such as EndureAir and SisIR Radar reflect a broader trend within India’s deep-tech ecosystem. The country’s young entrepreneurs are increasingly shifting from a reliance on imported technology to designing and manufacturing critical defence and operational systems domestically, aligning with national interests and security needs.

As India continues to champion indigenous technology, the contributions of these start-ups are crucial in enhancing the country’s capabilities in diverse areas, including logistic support and disaster management, thereby fostering greater technological self-reliance in various sectors.
