Himachal Pradesh is expected to experience a significant increase in monsoon activity starting from the evening of August 10. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in various parts of the state through August 11. Sandeep Kumar Sharma, a Senior Scientist at IMD Himachal Pradesh, indicated that light to moderate rainfall was reported in several areas over the past day.

Dharamshala recorded the highest rainfall at 61 mm, while Arki in Solan saw 25 mm, and Shimla experienced approximately 40 mm of rainfall. Sharma explained that monsoon conditions are set to strengthen from the evening of August 10, particularly affecting the mid and high hill regions where heavy rainfall may occur intermittently.

Weather Alerts Issued for Affected Districts

The IMD has issued an orange alert for August 10 and 11 for the districts of Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi, warning of the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall. In addition, a yellow alert has been issued for Una, Bilaspur, and Shimla, highlighting the likelihood of isolated heavy rainfall in other regions of the state.

According to forecasts, the intensity of rainfall is anticipated to decrease slightly on August 12 and 13, with weather activity expected to be confined to central and adjacent districts. Some locations may still experience heavy rainfall, leading to a yellow alert being put in place for parts of Chamba, Bilaspur, Kangra, and Mandi.

Following these dates, monsoon activity is predicted to regain strength from August 14 to August 16, with widespread moderate rainfall expected across the state, accompanied by heavy spells at isolated locations.

Rainfall Statistics and Safety Advisory

Between June 1 and August 10, Himachal Pradesh has recorded a rainfall deficit of 9 per cent compared to normal levels, with Mandi being the only district experiencing below-normal precipitation. The majority of other districts have reported normal or above-normal rainfall, according to Sharma.

The IMD has advised both residents and tourists to remain cautious while travelling during this period of active monsoon weather. The potential for heavy rainfall may result in sudden rises in water levels in rivers, streams, and other water bodies, indicating the need for vigilance. Sharma urged individuals to plan their travels according to weather conditions and avoid unnecessary journeys during adverse weather.

Furthermore, the IMD has warned of reduced visibility in areas of Shimla, Solan, and surrounding regions due to low clouds and intermittent heavy rainfall. As for temperatures, they are expected to stay largely within the normal range, with Shimla recording about 24°C, Solan’s temperatures ranging from 27°C to 29°C, and Una and Bilaspur seeing temperatures between 32°C and 34°C.
