The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, has categorically rejected recent claims of a Chinese incursion in the state. On August 7, Khandu addressed reporters, asserting the Indian Army’s presence in the region and expressing his commitment to verify the allegations. He stated, “We don’t think there was an incursion as the Indian Army personnel are deployed and maintaining the territory.” Khandu vowed to engage with local communities and the Indian Army to gather information regarding the situation.

Responses from State Officials

Further supporting Khandu’s statement, Arunachal Pradesh’s Home Minister Mama Natung had previously dismissed the allegations of Chinese encroachment as mere “rumours”. He urged the media to verify claims before publicising them, emphasising that there was no evidence to substantiate the allegations. Natung expressed confidence in the ability of Indian soldiers, stating that they are stationed around the clock to secure the border against any threats.

In his remarks, Natung asserted, “The reality is that there is no Chinese encroachment in Arunachal Pradesh. Our soldiers are standing 24/7 on the borders to protect Mother India.” His comments aimed to reassure the public regarding the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Last month, amid rising tensions, the Home Minister urged the public to place trust in the armed forces, stating that they are ready to defend the nation’s territory. He noted that such claims of incursions should not be taken seriously, labelling them as unfounded.

Indian Army’s Clarification on Incursion Allegations

In June, the Indian Army clarified its position by refuting similar allegations circulating in various media outlets about Chinese encroachment. The Army described the reports as “incorrect and without basis,” emphasising the ongoing vigilance of Indian forces along the border. An official statement noted, “We have seen some media reports alleging recent encroachment by Chinese PLA and setting up of camps in Arunachal Pradesh. These reports are incorrect and without any basis.” This statement aimed to quell fears and misinformation regarding the security situation in the region.

The assertions made by the Chief Minister and Home Minister, along with the Indian Army’s rebuttals, seek to reinforce a sense of stability and preparedness among the local populace. The government has called for a collective understanding and vigilance rather than panic in response to misinformation online.

The leaders have called upon media personnel to ensure that news reporting is grounded in fact, thereby reducing unnecessary anxiety among residents of Arunachal Pradesh.
