Flood-Hit Arunachal Families Demand Compensation, Relief After Devastation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The aftermath of severe floods in Ledum village, located in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district, has left visible traces of destruction nearly two weeks after the incident. On June 28, the simultaneous swelling of the Sileng and Kileng rivers resulted in extensive flooding, submerging homes, damaging agricultural land, and sweeping away livestock. Residents are now calling for compensation, rehabilitation, and efforts to restore their livelihoods.

The floods caused significant damage to local fisheries, filling ponds with silt and debris. Many residents are now facing devastating losses and express urgent needs for government assistance. Local families have been vocal about their struggles, highlighting that the floods have crippled their sources of income and food security.

Government Response and Assurance of Support

Despite these assurances, residents remain concerned about the immediate need for relief. They continue to appeal to the authorities for quick action as they recover from the exhaustive impact of the floods. A local woman shared her plight regarding the destruction of her fish ponds and agricultural land, making it clear that ongoing erosion from floodwaters poses a severe threat to her remaining assets.

Assessment of Damage by Central Teams

In a bid to understand the extent of the disaster, an inter-ministerial central team led by Nishtha Tiwari from the Ministry of Home Affairs visited various flood-affected areas in Arunachal Pradesh. Their mission was to evaluate the damages caused by the floods and landslides, ensuring that the state receives adequate assistance from the central government.

Although certain affected areas remain inaccessible due to continuing rainfall, the central team has managed to gauge the scale of the devastation. Officials acknowledge the difficulties in estimating the financial cost of the damage at this time, given its extensive nature. The team aims to gather all relevant information to facilitate timely aid and recovery efforts.

As affected residents await the government’s assistance, the urgency for immediate support continues to grow. The cooperation between local and central authorities represents an essential step toward addressing the challenges faced by the people of Ledum. The hope is that swift action will be taken to mitigate further hardships as recovery efforts unfold.
