Ambala Police has issued a traffic advisory for individuals travelling between Delhi and Punjab following the sealing of the Shambhu Border. The closure is a response to a significant gathering of farmers preparing to march to Delhi as part of the ‘Desh Bachao Morcha’ Mahapanchayat, intended to protest against the proposed India-US trade agreement.

To alleviate the disruptions caused by the border closure, authorities are recommending that vehicles travelling from Delhi to Punjab use the Ambala Cantt-Chandigarh route, which includes passing through Lalru, Dera Bassi, and Zirakpur. The advisory also suggests alternate routes for reaching Punjab from either Lalru or Dera Bassi.

For commuters journeying from Punjab to Delhi, it is advised to take the Rajpura-Lalru-Dera Bassi-Zirakpur-Ambala Cantt route. There are also alternative paths available from Rajpura, Lalru, or Dera Bassi to reach Ambala Cantt before continuing onward to Delhi.

Safety Measures and Emergency Contacts

The Ambala Police has urged travellers to contact 112 for emergencies and has highlighted its commitment to ensuring the safety of all commuters. Authorities have expressed regret for any inconvenience caused due to the closure and are focused on maintaining a smooth flow of traffic.

Visuals captured from the Patiala side indicate a large gathering of farmers present at the Shambhu Border, poised for their planned march towards Kisan Ghat in the national capital. The assembly forms part of their protest against the anticipated India-US trade deal.

On a recent occasion, farmers staged a protest at the Shambhu Toll Plaza located on the Ambala-Punjab highway in response to the arrest of Gurnam Singh Charuni, who is the National President of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni faction). This arrest has been at the centre of protesters’ demands, contributing to heightened tensions in the region.

Law Enforcement Preparedness

Heavy police personnel and barricading have been implemented at the Shambhu Border, which is a precautionary measure prior to the one-day farmers’ march to Delhi scheduled for Tuesday. This is in light of expected developments surrounding the farmers’ gathering at the Punjab-Haryana border.

Ambala Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jagbir Singh has indicated that the protesters have specific demands concerning issues in Delhi, leading to the initial road blockade. However, he confirmed that the situation has since stabilised, as he reported the clearance of the route previously blocked by demonstrators.

Ensuring law and order remains a priority for the police as preparations are underway to manage the unfolding situation during the farmers’ event. Authorities are remaining alert as they anticipate developments regarding the march and its impact on traffic and public safety.
