Punjab’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the success of the anti-drug initiative known as ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’, which has reportedly resulted in the arrest of 70,000 drug smugglers over the past 500 days. He reaffirmed the government’s steadfast commitment to eradicating drug-related issues in the state. Mann emphasised that the campaign is not merely a government effort but a movement supported by the public.

During a meeting with members of the Village Defence Committees, Mann acknowledged the contribution of 1.25 lakh volunteers who have become integral to the campaign. He stated that these volunteers have emerged from 13,000 villages across Punjab, indicating widespread community mobilisation. He expressed gratitude toward the residents for transforming this initiative into a collective effort.

Mann highlighted that the drive would continue until Punjab is entirely free from the drug menace. He noted, “This curse could never be eliminated, but with the active support of the people, we have broken the backbone of this issue.” His remarks reflect a sense of determination within the government to tackle what was once viewed as an overwhelming challenge.

Focus on Rehabilitation and Awareness

The Chief Minister described the Punjab government’s commitment to offering rehabilitation and treatment for individuals affected by drug addiction. He mentioned the establishment of de-addiction centres to assist those struggling with substance abuse, enabling them to reclaim their dignity and self-respect. This approach shows a dual focus on enforcement against traffickers and support for those impacted by addiction.

In further remarks, Mann referred to the transformation of Punjab’s image. Once portrayed as ‘Udta Punjab’ due to its drug crisis, the state is now being characterised as “Padhta Te Tandrust Punjab,” highlighting improvements in education and general well-being. The Chief Minister noted that Punjab has achieved notable success in various educational metrics, further indicating the government’s holistic approach to development.

Mann asserted that Punjab has emerged as a frontrunner in primary and middle-school education, surpassing states like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi. The improvements in the educational sector, involving enhanced infrastructure and training for teachers, have been cited as examples of the government’s sustained efforts over the past four years. This achievement underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a healthier and more educated populace.

Mann concluded by emphasising that the unified efforts of the government and the community have started yielding results. He expressed optimism that the ongoing initiatives will eventually result in a drug-free Punjab.
