Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has raised concerns over the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s failure to respond to student demands during protests that unfolded in New Delhi. On July 21, Yadav joined a Congress protest that was a reaction to police actions against demonstrators marching towards Parliament the day prior. His remarks were directed at the government’s accountability concerning the grievances of the youth in the country.

Key Opposition Figures Join the Protest

During the demonstration on Lok Kalyan Marg, prominent figures from the Congress Party were present, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and KC Venugopal. They staged a sit-in, asserting that the voices of students require urgent attention. The protest saw participation from various politicians, including Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan and Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who aligned themselves with the Congress leaders near the Prime Minister’s residence.

The police enforced strict measures at the protest site, leading to interventions that prevented certain opposition leaders from joining the demonstration. Senior Congress member Bhupesh Baghel was reportedly stopped by law enforcement as he attempted to reach the area. The heavy police presence aimed to manage the situation as tensions escalated during the protests.

Rahul Gandhi expressed strong sentiments via a statement on X, highlighting the importance of addressing student concerns. He articulated that an assault on students equates to an attack on every Indian family, asserting that Prime Minister Modi must confront these issues directly. Gandhi urged citizens committed to justice for students to unite in solidarity in front of the Prime Minister’s residence.

Congress Demands Discussion in Parliament

The Congress Party has alleged that its representatives have been obstructed from raising student-related issues in Parliament. Yadav, speaking to media representatives, emphasised that their demands have been consistently raised in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The opposition is calling for the Home Minister to address the matter in Parliament and engage in a discussion regarding alleged lapses in democratic practices and the treatment of students.

Furthermore, the Congress has expressed a prolonged demand for the resignation of the Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, which has now persisted for 45 days. Yadav’s comments reflect a broader concern that the interests of students are being overlooked in the current political climate, which, according to him, warrants immediate attention from government officials.

Disruptions marked both houses of Parliament for the second consecutive day, with the opposition insisting on discussions surrounding the NEET-UG issue, underlining the depth of dissatisfaction among students and their representatives. The ongoing turmoil in Parliament signifies the growing unrest connected to educational policies and government accountability.
