Akhilesh Yadav, president of the Samajwadi Party and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being a “massive land mafia party.” His comments came during a press conference on August 10, where he demanded that the Centre provide clarity regarding allegations of embezzlement connected to donations for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Yadav’s remarks were aimed at highlighting ongoing parliamentary deadlocks and accountability issues within the government.

Concerns Over Police Actions and Legislative Stalemate

The former Chief Minister pressed the government regarding the recent introduction of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill, questioning the rationale behind using forceful measures such as lathi charges and tear gas against protestors. Yadav indicated that multiple students had been subjected to police violence during recent demonstrations and that the Centre bears responsibility for these actions. He remarked on the assurance given by the government regarding the regulation of foreign funds, asserting that many individuals have unlawfully transferred significant amounts of money out of India.

In remarks directed towards the building of the Ram Temple, he stated that there has been an alarming rise in land prices in Ayodhya, suggesting that the BJP is manipulating the situation for financial gain. “They are outright trying to seize control of these institutions,” he added, indicating a broader concern over governance and accountability in India.

The opposition parties, including the Congress, expressed their intentions to continue the legislative standoff until Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrives in Parliament to address their concerns regarding police actions against student protestors on July 20, as well as the Ram Mandir donation issue. The frequent adjournments of Parliament illustrate the growing tensions between the ruling and opposition parties amidst critical legislative matters.

Congress Demands Accountability

KC Venugopal, Congress General Secretary and MP, reiterated the necessity for Home Minister Amit Shah to make a statement in Parliament addressing the alleged police misconduct towards student demonstrators. He highlighted that Congress refuses to relent in the standoff until those issues are acknowledged, stating, “Without having a statement on that issue, we are not going to allow him to do that.” This reiteration of demand emphasizes the long-standing conflict between opposition voices and the ruling government.

Parliament was adjourned until 12 noon due to the ongoing deadlock, which postponed the discussion of several key bills, including the Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026, and the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. The opposition, specifically under the INDIA alliance, maintained a firm stance against proceeding with legislative matters until their concerns are adequately addressed.

The continuation of this standoff in Parliament highlights the increasing tensions and divisions between the government and various opposition parties, raising questions about the future of legislative progress. The repeated insistence from the opposition to pursue accountability indicates a larger demand for responsible governance in the country.
