The CSR Journal Magazine

Actress Akansha Puri has stated that she was approached with offers of money, flight tickets, and hotel accommodations to join the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar. In a conversation with ANI, Puri expressed that she received requests to promote the protest through social media reels. She declined these offers, emphasising her belief that the students at the protest deserve genuine support rather than being a means for promotional content.

Puri Stresses the Importance of Genuine Advocacy

Puri urged politicians and public figures to provide authentic support to the students involved in the protest. She articulated that the focus should be on understanding and addressing the students’ concerns rather than exploiting their situation for marketing gains. According to her, the primary goal should be listening to the voices of the young protesters who seek to express their views on pertinent issues.

Reflecting on the protest’s circumstances, Puri described the distressing scenes of students facing police force during demonstrations. She conveyed her disapproval of individuals creating content from the suffering of these students, suggesting that it diminishes the significance of their message. Puri stated that the youth participating in the protests represent the future of the nation and have every right to express their thoughts.

Puri echoed her disappointment at seeing young students being subjected to violence during the protests. She noted how the portrayal of these events as content can overshadow the fundamental issues at stake. Her remarks highlighted the need for compassion and understanding from the media and society in general, urging people to keep the core message in mind amidst the chaos.

Response to Criticism of Celebrity Involvement

On the topic of criticism directed at Bollywood personalities who have expressed solidarity with the protest, Puri stated that such criticisms are unfounded. She underscored that each individual has their unique style of offering support, and there should be no judgement on their methods. Puri stressed that public figures are often scrutinised for their involvement, regardless of the sincerity of their efforts.

She acknowledged the challenges faced by celebrities in showing support, as any action they take is subject to public interpretation. Some may accuse them of merely attempting to gain publicity while others may question their authenticity. Puri defended the notion that everyone participating is doing their best to contribute to the ongoing dialogue and to stand behind the students advocating for their rights.

The discussion surrounding the involvement of public figures in social activism remains contentious, with opinions divided on the sincerity of their contributions. Puri asserted that it is misleading to dismiss all support as mere marketing, emphasising the varied ways in which individuals can rally for a cause. She called for understanding and appreciation for the diverse forms of advocacy present in society.
