Adani Ports Secures 10-Year Marine Services Contract for Argentina’s First LNG Exports

The CSR Journal Magazine

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has successfully obtained a 10-year marine services contract for Argentina’s inaugural liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project, marking the company’s entry into the South American market. The contract was granted to Adani Harbour International FZCO, a subsidiary of APSEZ, through a partnership with the Argentina-based Meridian Group. The consortium was awarded the contract following a competitive bidding process conducted by Southern Energy S.A. (SESA). This agreement enhances Adani Ports’ position in the global energy logistics sector and further broadens its international marine services portfolio.

Comprehensive Marine Services Offered

According to a filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Adani-Meridian consortium will deliver a variety of marine services for the Southern Energy Floating LNG (FLNG) project in Argentina. The suite of services will encompass tugboat operations for LNG carriers, offshore logistical support, supply services, and crew transportation. Operations will utilize four high-specification tugboats, one anchor handling tug supply vessel, and one crew boat. The execution of the contract will occur through Meridian Transportes Martimos S.A., a joint venture wherein Adani Harbour International FZCO holds a 51% interest and Meridian Group retains the remaining 49%.

Company Leadership Remarks

Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and Chief Executive Officer of APSEZ, stated that this project illustrates the company’s growing capacity to assist large-scale energy infrastructure initiatives in diverse regions. He emphasized that, with marine operations spanning 12 countries and an expanding fleet of marine assets serving ports, LNG terminals, national oil companies, refineries, and offshore facilities, the company brings extensive operational expertise to challenging maritime environments. Gupta noted that the collaboration with local partners is instrumental in establishing reliable maritime ecosystems that facilitate new energy trade routes and enhance long-term supply resilience.

Argentina’s Emerging LNG Capabilities

Argentina is increasingly perceived as a significant potential supplier of LNG, with agreements already in place to facilitate exports of up to 10 million tonnes of LNG annually to India starting in 2027. The Southern Energy FLNG project is expected to play a crucial role in linking Argentina’s expanding gas resources with global energy markets. This initiative is being developed by Southern Energy S.A., a collaboration between Golar LNG and Pan American Energy (PAE).

Commercial Operations Timeline

The project, located in the San Matías Gulf in Argentina’s Río Negro Province, will utilize the floating liquefied natural gas vessel Hilli Episeyo to process and export natural gas. The facility is set to receive gas from the General San Martin pipeline and will convert it into LNG onboard the vessel. Commercial operations are anticipated to commence in September 2027. During the initial phase, the project aims to produce 2.45 million tonnes of LNG annually, equivalent to approximately 28 LNG cargoes each year. Upon becoming operational, it will mark Argentina’s first LNG export endeavor, paving the way for a new chapter in the nation’s energy sector and creating a new supply route for global buyers, including those in India.
