Actor Dibyendu Bhattacharya, noted for his roles in various popular series, has expressed his strong backing for the student-led protests initiated by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in Delhi. He described the police intervention against demonstrators as both “disheartening and devastating,” urging the authorities to heed the concerns of the youth.

In a conversation with India Today, the 50-year-old actor emphasised that the protests were not politically motivated but aimed at safeguarding the future of students in the country. He underscored the importance of the right to protest, labelling it as a fundamental aspect of democracy. Bhattacharya stated that citizens must feel empowered to voice their grievances when they perceive shortcomings in the system.

Bhattacharya articulated, “If you think things are not going in the right direction, you have every right to protest. That is the democratic way to counter autocracy, dictatorship, or any form of oppression.” He highlighted that protesting is a fundamental civil right that should be exercised appropriately.

Alarming Rise in Student Suicides

The veteran actor raised concerns regarding the increasing numbers of student suicides, reportedly associated with exam-related pressures and irregularities. He remarked that these incidents indicate a generation that appears to be losing hope. “When students are dying by suicide, it signifies that future generations feel a lack of hope,” he stated.

Bhattacharya noted that many students affected by these issues come from middle-class and lower-middle-class backgrounds, making it challenging for them to seek educational opportunities abroad. He called on the government to assume accountability for the systemic failures that lead to school closures and examination malpractices.

Condemning the police’s actions during the CJP’s Chalo Sansad march, Bhattacharya expressed his distress at the sight of students facing violence. He candidly shared his emotional turmoil, saying, “I feel like I should go there and speak to the students rather than watch them being tortured.” He questioned how such incidents could occur in a civil society, expressing deep concern for the state of the nation.

Wider Support for Student Demands

As this protest gained momentum, it has encouraged various celebrities to vocalise their support for the student movement. Bhattacharya welcomed this trend, urging more individuals to participate actively and advocate for the students’ cause. He stated, “People who have senses and sensibilities should unite and implore the government to listen to the citizens.” He emphasised that this issue transcends politics and revolves around essential reform for India.

Numerous Bollywood personalities, including Rajkummar Rao and Preity Zinta, have also shown solidarity with the protesters, thereby amplifying their call for educational reforms. Bhattacharya concluded his remarks by distancing himself from political affiliations, asserting his main priority is the future of the country.

He expressed concern over the treatment of young protesters and highlighted the emotional weight of witnessing such events. “Even now, we are beating our own children and firing tear gas at them. My heart is crying. I just feel helpless,” he concluded.

Background of the Protests

Bhattacharya’s comments came soon after violence broke out during the students’ Chalo Sansad march on the opening day of the Monsoon Session. Protesters accused Delhi Police of excessive force, while the authorities claimed their personnel were attacked. The march was part of an ongoing CJP protest at Jantar Mantar, which has lasted over 23 days.

The demonstration gained additional support following the participation of educator Sonam Wangchuk, who began an indefinite hunger strike to highlight the demands for reforms in India’s education system. The protesters are seeking an investigation into the NEET exam paper leak, increased accountability for national examinations, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

As the protest continues at Jantar Mantar, an increasing number of students, activists, and public figures are joining the movement, advocating for urgent educational reforms and accountability from the government.
