Knife Attack, Hanuman Chalisa Protest: Mira Road Bakri Eid Row Escalates Dramatically

The CSR Journal Magazine

A dispute concerning the construction of a shed for sacrificial goats ahead of Bakri Eid resulted in heightened tensions within a housing society in Thane district, Maharashtra, leaving at least three individuals injured. The altercation reportedly escalated late on May 26 in Mira Road, where various members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal joined local residents to express their objections to the temporary structure and the tying of goats.

According to police accounts, the situation intensified around 12:50 am when an individual allegedly approached a group of protesters inquiring about Nagnath Kamble, a local VHP leader. During the exchange, the man reportedly brandished a knife, attempting to assault the assembled group. In the ensuing scuffle, multiple individuals, reportedly connected to the VHP, were injured.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed following a complaint from Harsh Singh, who was among those injured in the incident. Authorities apprehended the accused individual shortly after the occurrence, facilitating the subsequent reporting to law enforcement.

Escalation of Tensions and Further Protests

The protests escalated as members of the VHP and Bajrang Dal gathered at the entrance of the society to recite the Hanuman Chalisa, demanding stringent actions against those who injured their protesters. The police intervened to prevent further unrest, particularly as some members reportedly sought to bring a pig onto the premises to conduct a “Varaha Puja” in response to the goat sacrifices.

“Varaha Puja,” traditionally celebrated in honour of Lord Vishnu’s boar incarnation, is observed primarily during Varaha Jayanti on September 12. Despite its cultural significance, the timing of this protest has raised concerns, prompting police presence to maintain order.

In an effort to mediate, senior police officials, including the Divisional Commissioner of Police, arrived at the scene to address the tensions and facilitate dialogue between the conflicting groups, aiming to avoid further confrontation.

Political Reactions and Community Outreach

The unfolding controversy has elicited a range of political responses. Sanjay Upadhyay, the BJP MLA for Borivali, issued warnings against illegal slaughter practices while making contentious remarks regarding the protest’s nature. He drew parallels between the situation in Mira Road and a reported incident involving a Muslim family in Borivali, sparking criticism and concern.

In contrast, Pratap Sarnaik, a minister from Shiv Sena and local MLA, has called for restraint, emphasising the importance of respecting diverse sentiments within the community. He attributed the unrest to external influences aiming to incite community tensions.

Abu Azmi of the Samajwadi Party stressed the need for compliance with local guidelines concerning animal sacrifice, advocating for measures that facilitate the rights of minority communities while calling for legal action against any leaders violating state regulations.

Government Response and Regulatory Measures

In light of the rising tensions, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and other BJP officials have urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to impose a blanket ban on goat sacrifices within housing societies during Bakri Eid. Despite existing regulations about animal slaughter, local leaders insist that goats continue to be brought into residential areas, prompting calls for stricter enforcement.

While BMC officials maintain that comprehensive protocols exist to govern these practices, the Maharashtra government has instructed law enforcement agencies to apply stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against cattle smugglers and illicit slaughterhouses in anticipation of Bakri Eid celebrations.

This blend of community unrest, political statements, and governmental directives highlights the intricate relationship between religious practices and local governance in a diverse society.
