Clashes between the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels and government forces in Yemen intensified overnight on Thursday, heightening fears of a resurgence in the country’s civil war. The violent engagements reportedly took place primarily in Taiz province, where one government soldier was killed and another critically injured, according to Yemeni military officials.

The ongoing skirmishes are reportedly part of a series of Houthi attacks on areas held by the government, with officials indicating that dozens of government troops have lost their lives in these confrontations since the previous week. The Yemeni military has responded with artillery strikes targeting Houthi positions.

In addition to ground combat, the Houthis have utilised drones and missiles to strike various government-controlled territories. Their recent attacks reportedly include targeting oil facilities linked to Saudi Arabia, which supports the Yemeni government, as well as disrupting maritime activities in the Red Sea.

Regional Instability and Environmental Concerns

The recent violence in Yemen occurs amid escalating instability across the wider region. For instance, the Houthis targeted a commercial vessel in the Bab el-Mandeb strait on Tuesday, resulting in six fatalities, including three Pakistani nationals. Moreover, Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry has reported that one of its citizens is missing following the attack.

Environmental concerns have also arisen from oil spills off the coastlines of Iran and Oman. The Iranian government is reportedly mobilising efforts to mitigate an oil spill off Qeshm Island, while Oman is dealing with a separate incident involving a grounded tanker, the Caroline Bezengi, which has leaked oil into the Arabian Sea after experiencing an explosion in June.

Although no party has claimed responsibility for these spills, experts suggest that the incidents may be linked to heightened military activity in the region, including attacks involving vessels. A UK maritime risk company has been contracted to handle the salvage operation and manage the ongoing oil leak.

Violence Escalates in Gaza and West Bank

In Gaza, Israeli airstrikes on Thursday reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals and injuries to several others. Notably, Jamal Abu Kamil, a police chief in the Gaza governorate, was killed in an attack on his vehicle. The Israeli military has yet to comment on this specific strike.

Another attack in Khan Younis resulted in one fatality and additional injuries, as Israeli forces purportedly targeted a Hamas company commander involved in allegedly planning attacks against Israeli troops. The increasing frequency of these strikes underlines escalating tensions in the region.

Additionally, there has been a notable rise in tensions between Israeli settlers and Palestinian residents in the occupied West Bank. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee condemned a siege of a Palestinian-American family’s home by settlers, describing the act as terroristic. Reports indicate that settlers targeted multiple homes in the village of Qusra, leading to confrontations and significant distress among local residents.

As these events unfold, the situation in Yemen, Gaza, and the West Bank exemplifies the progressively volatile landscape within the Middle East, further complicating efforts towards a sustainable resolution.
