Whipped, Branded and Guarded by Pit Bulls: 13 Workers Rescued from UP Factory

The CSR Journal Magazine

Thirteen labourers were reportedly held captive at a factory in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, for nearly two years. They had initially arrived with promises of work and fair wages but allege they were subjected to inhumane treatment. According to their accounts, they were stripped of their mobile phones and identity documents, leaving them isolated and vulnerable.

During their confinement, the workers claimed they were deprived of adequate food, receiving only dry bread once every 24 hours. Many reported being beaten if they questioned their treatment or attempted to flee. Allegedly, two pitbull dogs were kept at the facility to intimidate the workers and deter any attempts to escape.

The ordeal allegedly lasted for months, and some workers bore visible signs of physical abuse. These grave allegations were brought to light following a raid conducted by teams from the Labour Department and local police.

Investigation and Rescue Operation

The investigation began when one of the captives managed to secure his freedom and alerted the authorities about the situation inside the factory. His report led to a coordinated operation involving various agencies, including the police and local administration.

Authorities undertook a raid on June 24, resulting in the rescue of the thirteen workers. The individuals had been brought to the factory from various states, including Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and even from as far as Nepal, under false pretences regarding employment. Those rescued were identified as Ramu, Vikram, Narayan, Sitaram, Santosh, Shivam Jatav, Jagdish, Rajhans, Sahil, Ranjeet Paswan, Dilshad, Ujjwal, and Sonu Chauhan.

During the operation, two individuals, Shivam Tyagi and Pradeep Baliyan, were taken into custody. Officials also seized items such as sticks alleged to have been used to inflict harm on the workers.

Continuing Investigations and Future Actions

The police have reportedly launched an extensive investigation into the allegations of illegal confinement and exploitation, with particular attention to claims regarding potential fatalities among the workers while in captivity. However, details regarding any such incidents remain unconfirmed as the investigation proceeds.

Upon their rescue, the workers received medical examinations and treatment to address their physical and psychological needs. Officials expressed their relief at the successful operation and formally welcomed the workers with garlands, after which arrangements were made for their safe return to their home regions.

As inquiries continue, law enforcement is expected to take further action based on the evidence gathered throughout the investigation. The plight of these workers highlights the ongoing issues surrounding bonded labour in India, necessitating systemic changes to protect vulnerable populations.
