The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched India’s inaugural hydrogen-powered train on July 17, during an event in Jind, Haryana. This initiative represents a significant advancement towards environmentally friendly transportation in the Indian railway sector. The train will operate on an 89-kilometre route connecting Jind Junction, Gohana Junction, and Sonipat, as well as several intermediate stations, positioning India among a select group of nations utilising hydrogen trains.

During the event, Prime Minister Modi noted that the name of the region has been permanently inscribed in history, akin to the first train journey between Bombay and Thane. He remarked that future generations would remember this corridor when discussing advancements in green mobility. The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of this milestone for Indian Railways and the country as a whole.

Train’s Features

Modi highlighted the train’s capability, stating it operates on a 3,200-horsepower propulsion system, making it the most powerful hydrogen-powered train globally and the longest in India. The technology for hydrogen trains has emerged in the last seven to eight years, with only three to four countries currently able to operate such trains.

Development Projects Inaugurated

Alongside the train inauguration, Prime Minister Modi also unveiled and laid the foundation stone for various development projects worth approximately Rs 14,700 crore in Jind. This includes numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing local infrastructure and services. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw were present for the ceremonies.

In a broader context, the Prime Minister dedicated additional development projects exceeding Rs 4,700 crore in Chandigarh. These projects are expected to improve healthcare, education, and road infrastructure in the region. Modi emphasised Chandigarh’s status as a model for systematic national growth, underlining the government’s ongoing commitment to the city’s development.

Furthermore, Modi noted a significant legal reform undertaken a year and a half ago, transitioning from punitive colonial laws to a more justice-oriented system. He mentioned that the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita’s implementation began in Chandigarh, reaffirming the government’s focus on legal reforms.

Infrastructure Enhancements Across Punjab

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated and launched the foundation stone for rail and road infrastructure projects amounting to Rs 5,470 crore in Jalandhar. Among these initiatives was the redevelopment of 75 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, including Jalandhar Cantt. This scheme aims at revitalising railway infrastructure as part of one of the largest station redevelopment programmes in the world.

The inauguration of these redeveloped stations has met with positive reactions from BJP leaders, who praised the government’s commitment to modernising railway infrastructure. Amid the celebrations, some leaders expressed concerns regarding the state government of Punjab, pointing out perceived issues related to law and order, rising debt, and a stagnation of development in the region.

BJP leaders highlighted the discrepancies between the development achievements seen in other states and the current situation in Punjab. They called for greater attention to public safety, governance, and the overall well-being of citizens in the face of rising crime rates and social challenges.

Positive Reception of Infrastructure Developments

The unveiling of the railway stations aligns with the government’s broader efforts to reinforce public transport infrastructure, aiming to enhance commuter experiences across various states. The government seeks substantial improvements in the railway system as its modernisation continues.

Telangana BJP President N Ramchander Rao expressed pride in the inclusion of the Hi-Tech City station in Telangana among those newly renovated. He highlighted the advanced facilities and technology incorporated into the station’s design.

The initiative has drawn attention from various sectors, including former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who noted the transformation of Jalandhar Cantt station from a dilapidated structure to a modern facility, indicating a broader trend of successful infrastructural development across the country.
