Congress General Secretary and Rajasthan MLA Sachin Pilot has expressed his approval of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, stating that it signifies that the concerns of students and youth have been acknowledged. In a post on social media platform X, he articulated the need for accountability to have been addressed sooner and emphasised the necessity of delivering justice to affected students.

Pilot’s statement reiterated the importance of accountability in the government and called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to publicly apologise to the students. He underscored that many students had faced adverse consequences, and the families of those who lost their lives in the recent turmoil could never receive adequate compensation for their grief.

He described the government’s acceptance of Pradhan’s resignation as a reflection of the power of youth movements, further emphasising that the Prime Minister and the central government must take responsibility for the unrest and demand stringent actions against those responsible for the dysfunction in the education sector.

Tewari Declares Resignation a Victory for Student Protests

Congress MP Manish Tewari, speaking from Chandigarh, characterised the resignation as a triumph for the young students who have been actively protesting across India. He termed it a significant indication of the erosion of confidence in those who have been responsible for acts against the youth exercising their rights. Tewari attributed the resignation to the sustained pressure of student protests and expressed that it signifies a broader movement within the country.

In his comments, Tewari specifically commended the contributions of the Generation Z protesters, highlighting their resolve in confronting governmental excesses, as they faced lathi charges and other forms of repression. He noted that the young protestors’ bravery amidst these challenges deserves recognition and marks an important milestone for youth activism in India.

Tewari also remarked on the resignation as a symbol of democratic principles, indicating that even a government perceived as rigid must ultimately respond to the voices of its citizens. He reiterated that the youth’s determination in the face of adversity has led to meaningful change.

Context of Protests and Resignation

The resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan follows extensive protests across the nation concerning irregularities in competitive examinations. Students have been advocating for improved transparency and accountability within the education system. The controversy gained traction in May when allegations surrounding a NEET-UG paper leak came to light, prompting widespread unrest.

This situation escalated as students demanded a reformation of the examination process, which culminated in significant protests spearheaded by movements such as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). Initially a satirical social media effort stemming from remarks by Chief Justice Surya Kant, the movement garnered substantial support, leading to demonstrations outside Parliament and in various cities including Delhi.

In parallel, Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh engaged in discussions with CJP representatives in what has become the third round of talks aimed at resolving the unrest around examination issues. Following these discussions, the CJP announced the cessation of their protests, advising participants to return home as the government initiated measures to address the students’ concerns.
