Local Congress leader, contractor and former panchayat president David D’Souza was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Karnataka’s Udupi district on Friday, police said.

The attackers allegedly opened fire on D’Souza before fleeing the scene, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but died while being shifted for further treatment. Police have launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the killing.

Attack Carried Out by Unidentified Assailants

According to preliminary information, two men arrived in a vehicle and allegedly fired at D’Souza before escaping from the spot.

The injured Congress leader was immediately taken to a nearby hospital. However, officials said he succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to another medical facility.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and investigators are examining all possible angles.

Investigation Underway

Senior police officers reached the scene shortly after the shooting and began collecting evidence.

Police are expected to examine CCTV footage from the area and record statements from witnesses to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the attack.

No arrests have been made so far, and efforts are underway to identify and trace the assailants.

Prominent Local Figure

D’Souza was a well-known figure in Udupi district, having served as a panchayat president and remaining active in local Congress politics.

Apart from his political role, he was also engaged in contracting work and was known in the local business community.

Police said further details would emerge as the investigation progresses and authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the killing.
