The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women has announced its intention to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Srishti Kandari, a school teacher who reportedly died by suicide in Dehradun. Chairperson Kusum Kandwal expressed profound sorrow over the incident, which occurred within eight months of Kandari’s marriage. The Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the case, aiming to delve into the factors that led to this unfortunate event.

Kandwal confirmed she personally reached out to the victim’s mother and coordinated with local law enforcement officials including the Circle Officer (CO), the Station House Officer (SHO) and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). She stated, “As soon as we came to know about Srishti, I spoke to the CO, SHO and SSP. The Women’s Commission takes suo motu cognisance,” underscoring the urgency of the investigation.

Support for Young Women in Distress

During her statement, Kandwal highlighted the importance of young women voicing their concerns and seeking help instead of contemplating extreme actions. She reassured individuals facing difficult situations that the Women’s Commission is committed to providing support and justice. “The doors of the Commission are always open for you. Approach the Police. You will get justice,” she emphasised. Her comments reflect a broader message encouraging those in distress to come forward rather than suffer in silence.

Additionally, she asserted that strict legal action would be pursued against anyone identified as responsible for Kandari’s death. “We will ensure that thorough investigations take place so that such incidents do not recur in the future,” she stated, indicating the Commission’s resolve to address similar issues effectively.

Police Investigation Following Family’s Allegations

On 31 July, the Dehradun Police formally registered a case involving a private secretary from the Uttarakhand Secretariat and his family members in connection with the alleged dowry-related circumstances of Kandari’s death. Reports indicate that she died by hanging, prompting her mother to file a complaint alleging ongoing harassment by her husband and his relatives. This complaint served as the catalyst for the police’s criminal investigation.

Circle Officer Vandana Verma provided further details about the police response. She confirmed that the Doiwala Kotwali police station received initial reports about the suicide, leading to prompt action by law enforcement. “Information was received that a woman had committed suicide by hanging herself. Acting on this information, the police team inspected the scene; the inquest proceedings were conducted, and a post-mortem examination was carried out,” Verma elaborated, detailing the procedural steps taken following the incident.

In light of the family’s claims of foul play and mental distress, police efforts have shifted to a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the facts leading to the tragedy. The case has heightened public awareness and concern over issues related to dowry harassment and mental health among newly married women, reiterating the need for safeguards and support mechanisms within society.
