An Indian student from Uttarakhand has been selected to represent the country in the international scientific and educational expedition, Icebreaker of Knowledge, which began on Tuesday aboard Russia’s nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy from Murmansk.

The 10-day expedition has brought together students aged 14 to 16 from 22 countries, including India, Bangladesh, China and Russia. Participants will travel to the geographic North Pole before returning after reaching 90° North latitude.

Uttarakhand Student Represents India

Lucky Rawat, a resident of Chakrata in Uttarakhand, said he was honoured to represent India in the international expedition.

“I am from Chakrata in Uttarakhand and have come here as India’s ambassador for this expedition. It is a 10-day expedition during which we will travel to the North Pole. We will be among the very few people who have actually reached the North Pole,” Rawat told ANI.

He said the opportunity came after successfully completing a multi-stage international selection process.

Three-Stage Selection Process

Rawat said aspiring participants were required to clear a three-stage competition before the final selection.

According to him, one student from each participating country was chosen to take part in the expedition.

“To get here, we had to clear a three-stage competition, after which one student from each country was selected to represent their nation,” he said.

Family Expresses Pride

Rawat’s father, Ram Singh, said the family was proud of his achievement and his opportunity to represent India on the international platform.

“I am proud of my son for clearing the online examination and being selected to represent India. He is going on a 10-day expedition to the North Pole,” Singh told ANI.

Expedition Promotes Scientific Learning

The Icebreaker of Knowledge expedition is an international scientific and educational initiative that brings together students from different countries to promote scientific learning, cultural exchange and awareness about the Arctic.

The participants departed from the FSUE Atomflot base in Murmansk aboard the nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy and are expected to complete the voyage after reaching the geographic North Pole.
