US President Donald Trump is visiting California and Nevada this week in a bid to sharpen political contrasts with Democrats on the economy, border security and crime ahead of the November midterm elections, which will determine whether Republicans retain control of Congress.

The two-state trip includes a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner in California and an economy-focused event in Nevada. It comes as Trump continues to face weak public approval on his handling of the economy, with rising living costs remaining a key concern for American voters.

Trip Focuses on Economy and Republican Campaign

Trump arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday to attend a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner at his family’s golf club in Rancho Palos Verdes.

On Wednesday, he is scheduled to speak on economic issues at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas as part of the administration’s effort to promote its economic agenda ahead of the November elections.

According to the White House, the President will use the visit to contrast his policies with those of Democratic leaders, particularly California Governor Gavin Newsom.

White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said Trump would “draw a sharp contrast between his commonsense agenda and the radical policies of Democrats like Gavin Newsom”, while highlighting tax cuts, efforts to reduce fraud in government programmes and measures to strengthen immigration enforcement and tackle crime.

Polls Show Weak Public Confidence on Economy

The western tour comes at a time when Trump continues to struggle with voter perceptions of the economy.

An AP-NORC poll conducted in late July found that 32 per cent of US adults approved of his handling of economic issues, while 69 per cent described the economy as “poor”.

Many respondents identified the rising cost of essential goods, including groceries and petrol, as a major source of financial stress.

The survey also found Trump’s overall job approval rating at 33 per cent, slightly lower than it was at the same stage of his first presidential term.

Fresh Political Clash With Gavin Newsom

During the visit, Trump is expected to renew his criticism of California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is widely viewed as a potential Democratic presidential contender in 2028.

The two leaders have maintained a contentious relationship despite briefly signalling cooperation after devastating wildfires in Los Angeles County shortly after Trump’s return to office in January 2025.

Newsom welcomed Trump during that visit as the President toured areas destroyed by the fires, which killed more than two dozen people, displaced thousands and devastated entire neighbourhoods.

Relations later deteriorated after Trump deployed National Guard troops and US Marines to Los Angeles without the governor’s approval following protests linked to federal immigration raids.

Newsom subsequently accused the President of undermining democratic institutions, saying “democracy is under assault” by Trump.

Ahead of the latest visit, Newsom’s office said Trump was returning to California to raise campaign funds rather than assist wildfire survivors.

“More than anything, we’d like the President to keep the promise he made on January 24, 2025: to ‘take care of Los Angeles’. 18 months later, survivors are still waiting. And while you’re here, Mr. President, welcome to the world’s fourth-largest economy, growing faster than Texas and Florida combined. Enjoy your stay,” Newsom said.

California Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks also criticised the visit, saying, “Trump treats California like his personal political punching bag, right up until he needs someone to write a check. He may hit up a few billionaire donors who bankroll his political operation, but the people of California have already made it clear: they want nothing to do with his chaos and corruption.”

Security Incident Before Fundraiser

Shortly before Trump’s arrival, authorities arrested a California man at the Rancho Palos Verdes golf course after he was allegedly found carrying ammunition and a firearm in his vehicle while appearing to monitor security preparations.

Officials have not indicated any direct threat to the President, and the fundraiser proceeded as scheduled.

Nevada Visit Comes Amid Key Governor’s Race

Trump’s visit to Nevada coincides with one of the country’s most closely watched gubernatorial contests, where Republican Governor Joe Lombardo is seeking re-election against Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford.

The Nevada State Democratic Party has erected billboards linked to Trump’s visit, seeking to associate him with rising living costs in the state.

Nevada continues to face significant economic challenges, including a shortage of affordable housing, rising electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence data centres and the impact of federal spending cuts.

Cost of Living Remains Political Challenge

For months, Trump has promoted his tax-cut proposals and argued that his policies would revive American manufacturing.

However, high interest rates, rising petrol prices linked to the conflict with Iran, continuing tariff policies and persistent housing shortages have complicated the administration’s economic message.

Even some White House events billed as economic speeches have frequently shifted towards attacks on political opponents and discussions of other policy priorities.

Trump’s latest visit to California and Nevada is intended to reinforce Republican campaign themes ahead of the November elections, but it comes as concerns over inflation, housing affordability and everyday living costs continue to dominate voter sentiment.
