Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh recently held a diplomatic meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York. The engagement was described as “productive” by the Minister. This meeting took place during the second International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) linked to the Global Compact for Migration (GCM).

Singh has been part of discussions in New York since May 1, directing the Indian delegation at the forum that runs until May 8. The Minister shared his positive assessment of the meeting on social media platform X, indicating a fruitful dialogue with Guterres.

Activities During the Forum

Throughout the day, Minister Singh engaged in various activities, including delivering India’s national statement during the plenary session of the IMRF. His address was aimed at highlighting India’s perspectives on migration governance and the significance of international cooperation.

Singh also led a special side event organised by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations. This session focused on “Leveraging Digital Innovation in Migration Governance: The e-Migrate Experience of India,” which aimed to showcase India’s initiatives in utilising technology for effective migration management.

In addition to these activities, Singh participated in a reception at the Permanent Mission of India, where he addressed an audience comprising UN ambassadors, senior officials, and various heads of delegations. During this address, he advocated for necessary institutional reforms within the United Nations, calling for a body that is agile and capable of responding to contemporary global challenges.

Commemorative Event for Operation Sindoor

On the same day, the Indian Permanent Mission hosted a commemorative event to mark the first anniversary of “Operation Sindoor”. This military operation was initiated by India in May 2022 in response to terror activities, specifically following the Pahalgam attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians.

The event served not only as a remembrance of the operation but also emphasised India’s commitment to addressing terrorism and ensuring national security. Singh’s presence at this event underscored the government’s ongoing efforts to prioritise security concerns in international discussions.

The Permanent Mission expressed its appreciation for the Minister’s active participation, referencing his leadership and guidance as crucial in advancing India’s interests on the international stage. The engagement at the UN highlighted India’s ongoing diplomatic efforts and its approach to tackling global issues.
