Trump Says He May Invite Obama, Biden And Bushes To Watch Football Together

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump has suggested bringing together former American presidents, including Barack Obama and Joe Biden, for a football game viewing at the White House, describing it as a gesture that would attract widespread public attention.

The proposal came during an episode of Storytime with the Second Lady, a podcast hosted by US Second Lady Usha Vance, which was released on Friday ahead of the 250th anniversary of American Independence. The episode featured Trump reading a children’s book about US presidents and reflecting on their personal interests and time in office.

White House Football Gathering Suggested During Podcast

While reading President’s Play!, a book published by the White House Historical Association, Trump paused at an illustration showing a president hosting a live Super Bowl viewing at the White House and said it had inspired an idea.

“Maybe I should invite Barack Hussein Obama, Joe Biden, with the Bushes – or Bush. Maybe I should invite some of those people to watch a football game together,” Trump said during the programme.

He added, “Wouldn’t that be a nice story? The press would go wild.” Responding to the suggestion, Vance said, “A president reunion? That would be fun.”

The remarks drew attention because Trump has frequently criticised Obama and Biden in public appearances and political speeches throughout his political career.

Reflections On Public Service And Former Presidents

The podcast series features Vance interviewing guests as they read books to children on YouTube. During the episode, Trump used the book’s illustrations of former presidents’ leisure activities as a starting point for broader reflections on leadership and public service.

Speaking about life in the White House, Trump said, “You know, my attitude is you’re at the White House for a short period of time and it’s an honour to be here and you should work for the people, right?”

The discussion later turned to former president Bill Clinton after Trump came across a page depicting Clinton jogging on a running track built during his time in office.

“That’s nice. I didn’t even know that until recently, but he had a track built at the White House,” Trump said. He added, “I don’t think I’ll ever do that. I don’t see myself doing that. I don’t know. But he actually was a nice guy. I like Bill Clinton a lot. I still do.”

Light-Hearted Comments On Presidential History

Trump also made humorous observations about several former presidents featured in the book. One page showed former president William Howard Taft playing baseball, prompting Trump to comment on Taft’s well-known stature and fondness for the sport.

“He was a large man, very large. And he loved baseball. He’d go to baseball games, loved the hot dogs at the baseball games,” Trump said.

He went on to joke about presidential weight records, saying, “He was our heaviest president, and I have to be careful ’cause I don’t want to supersede his record. And a thing like that would be possible if I allowed it to happen.”

Released ahead of celebrations marking 250 years of American Independence, the podcast offered an unusually informal glimpse into Trump’s views on former presidents, public service and life at the White House, while also featuring his suggestion of a reunion involving some of his predecessors.
