Trump Arrives In France For G7 Summit With Iran Deal Set To Dominate Talks

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump arrived in the French resort town of Évian-les-Bains on Monday for the 52nd G7 Summit, with the recently announced agreement with Iran expected to feature prominently in discussions among world leaders.

“Everything is very nice,” Trump said while briefly greeting reporters after arriving in the scenic spa town, which is hosting the three-day summit from June 15 to 17.

The annual gathering brings together leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, while the European Union has participated in the grouping since 1981.

Iran Deal And Macron Meeting In Focus

Trump travelled overnight from Washington via Geneva and is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, who is hosting this year’s summit.

According to CNN, the US President had hoped to secure a framework for the Iran peace agreement before joining fellow leaders in France. The issue is expected to dominate discussions on regional stability and energy security.

Trump had cut short his participation in the 2025 G7 Summit in Canada amid escalating tensions involving Iran. Shortly afterwards, he ordered US strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities before announcing on Sunday that a deal with Tehran had been completed.

He has also stated that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen following the formal signing of the agreement on Friday.

Accompanying Trump aboard Air Force One were Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and several senior White House officials and advisers.

Macron Outlines Broad Agenda

Ahead of the summit, Macron released a video message on social media announcing his arrival in Évian and outlining the agenda for the high-level gathering.

“We will welcome here in Evian the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the European Commission, and the President of the European Council. Together, we’ll try to move forward on the major topics,” he said.

The French President indicated that discussions would cover global economic governance, financial architecture, health, energy security, cybersecurity and geopolitical crises, particularly developments in West Asia.

France has also invited several countries and international institutions to participate in outreach sessions aimed at strengthening international cooperation.

India To Mark Seventh Consecutive Participation

Among the outreach partners invited by France are India, Brazil, Kenya, South Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Ukraine, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

PM Modi’s participation will mark India’s 13th appearance at the summit as a partner country and his seventh consecutive attendance at the gathering, underlining New Delhi’s growing role in global affairs.

Macron highlighted France’s intention to deepen cooperation with countries including India, Brazil, Kenya and South Korea through the summit process.

As leaders gather in the French Alps, discussions are expected to focus on addressing economic imbalances, strengthening global institutions and responding to geopolitical challenges, with the newly announced Iran agreement likely to remain at the centre of deliberations throughout the summit.
