Switzerland Welcomes US-Iran MoU, Says It Will Host Signing Ceremony This Week

Switzerland has welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached between the United States and Iran, describing it as an important step towards de-escalation and stability in West Asia as diplomatic efforts gather pace to ease tensions in the region.

In a statement to ANI, a spokesperson for the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) said peace and security in the Near and Middle East remain a key priority of Swiss foreign policy and confirmed that Bern is coordinating with multiple stakeholders ahead of the planned signing ceremony later this week.

“Peace and security in the Near and Middle East are a priority of Swiss foreign policy. Switzerland welcomes the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and Iran, facilitated by Pakistan with the support of Qatar and other states, as an important step towards de-escalation,” the spokesperson said.

Switzerland In Contact With Key Stakeholders

The FDFA said it is maintaining close contact with the United States, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar to facilitate the signing of the agreement in Switzerland at the end of the week.

However, Swiss authorities declined to reveal further details regarding the proceedings or the format of the ceremony.

“No further details regarding the proceedings or the signing ceremony can be provided at this time,” the spokesperson added.

The latest development comes amid heightened diplomatic activity aimed at reducing tensions in West Asia and creating conditions for a broader round of negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

US President Donald Trump had earlier hailed the understanding with Iran, saying it would contribute to “real peace” and strengthen security across the region.

Tehran Outlines Conditions For Future Talks

Following Trump’s announcement on Truth Social, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, confirmed the agreement and said the official signing ceremony would take place on Friday, after which the text of the MoU would be made public.

According to Iran’s state-affiliated Press TV, Tehran would enter a proposed 60-day period of negotiations for a final agreement only after verifying that the United States had fulfilled commitments related to ending hostilities, lifting the blockade and releasing Iranian assets.

“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” Trump wrote on Sunday, adding, “Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

The understanding is being viewed as a major diplomatic breakthrough that could help lower regional tensions and provide momentum for broader negotiations.

Global Leaders Welcome Breakthrough

The European Union’s top leadership also welcomed the agreement. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa called for its swift and full implementation by all parties.

They stressed the importance of restoring freedom of navigation, describing it as essential for global trade and economic stability.

Leaders from across the world have similarly praised the breakthrough, viewing it as a rare opportunity to restore stability in West Asia, safeguard shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, ease pressure on global energy markets and create momentum for resolving concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.

The MoU is scheduled to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday, marking what could become a significant milestone in efforts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran.
