Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara has stated that any decision regarding the expansion of the state cabinet will be determined by the Congress party high command. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on July 27, ahead of his departure to New Delhi, he affirmed the significance of discussions taking place among top state leaders. Parameshwara indicated that Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, along with Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, are in the capital to engage in talks about the potential cabinet reshuffle.

“The Chief Minister, party president, and former Chief Minister are in Delhi for crucial discussions with the high command. The cabinet expansion will occur only following the high command’s decision,” Parameshwara explained, noting that the final outcome is expected to emerge from these discussions.

Key Meeting on Drought Conditions and Development Projects

Parameshwara also mentioned that Chief Minister Shivakumar has organised an important meeting with the state’s Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs while in Delhi. The primary agenda of this high-level meeting is to provide lawmakers with an update on the severe drought situation affecting Karnataka and to encourage them to advocate for the immediate release of outstanding central financial aid.

Moreover, the state leadership is seeking the MPs’ support to expedite approvals for critical infrastructure and development projects that have been stalled at the Centre. “We will inform our MPs about the drought circumstances and urge them to insist that the Central Government releases the grants that are owed to Karnataka. Furthermore, we will outline the status of various development projects awaiting approval,” Parameshwara stated.

This meeting aims to foster a unified approach among the MPs to address these pressing issues and enhance the chances of securing the necessary financial assistance from the federal government.

Political Proceedings Related to Cabinet Expansion

Earlier on the same day, Congress MLA Santosh Lad affirmed that there is a standard procedure for political appointments and asserted that the final decisions regarding leadership and ministerial roles rest with the party high command. He addressed the media concerning ongoing speculations and reiterated that maintaining a systematic approach is essential.

“Lad emphasised that both the Deputy Chief Minister and the Chief Minister would travel to Delhi to meet the party leadership and deliberate on various matters concerning the party and administration,” he remarked. These discussions will reportedly include AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge along with AICC General Secretaries Randeep Singh Surjewala and KC Venugopal.

Lad acknowledged the natural speculation regarding leadership roles and the aspirations of many party leaders to secure ministerial positions. However, he clarified, “The ultimate decision rests with the party high command. Not everyone can be accommodated in the cabinet.” This commentary highlights the competitive nature of political appointments and the necessity for organisational balance.

Balancing Experience and Youth in Leadership

In addressing the need for a balanced approach in leadership, Lad spoke on the importance of integrating experience with youth. He recognised the valuable contributions made by senior leaders in public service and noted that their insight remains critical for the party’s future directions.

“It is crucial that we maintain equilibrium between the aspirations of younger members and the seasoned experience of current leaders. The high command will decide how best to navigate this balance,” he stated, indicating that the party intends to nurture future leadership while respecting the foundational contributions of veteran politicians.

Lad dismissed the notion of any leader being forced out or needing special permissions for their roles, asserting that as long as individuals remain active, they will continue to be acknowledged as leaders within the organisation.

Presently, the Karnataka Cabinet consists of 14 members, including Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, following the appointment of Chief Minister Shivakumar on June 3. The anticipated cabinet expansion aims to address calls for enhanced regional and social representation within the ministry.
