CBFC Removes Eight-Second Kissing Scene From Spider-Man: Brand New Day

The CSR Journal Magazine

Three days remain until the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and anticipation is exceptionally high, as evidenced by ticket sales. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has completed the censor process, granting the film a U/A 13+ certificate with specific cuts mandated by the board.

The CBFC required the studio to implement several changes, primarily regarding language and visual content. The audio and subtitles were modified to exclude ‘obscene’ phrases found in three different spots throughout the film. These alterations occurred in both the first half and the latter part, following the intermission.

Another significant edit involved the removal of an eight-second long kissing scene, which was presented as a lip-lock. Once these amendments were agreed upon, the studio received the censor certificate on July 23.

Film Length and Content Overview

The final runtime of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as recorded on the censor certificate, is 144.52 minutes, which translates to 2 hours, 24 minutes, and 52 seconds. This sequel continues the narrative established in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and features actors Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon reprising their roles.

According to a report from Bollywood Hungama, ticket sales have already reached 2.60 lakh across the top three national chains—PVRInox and Cinepolis—just days before the premiere. It is anticipated that advance ticket sales could surpass 4 lakhs, leading the film to potentially open at Rs. 50 crore on a Thursday, a considerable achievement for a Hollywood release in India.

Alongside these developments, Bollywood Hungama has indicated that cinemas have been advised to establish premium pricing for the anticipated blockbuster. A source conveyed that ticket prices in some venues have reached levels comparable to recent local hits, while in most multiplexes, prices are relatively lower than those for the blockbuster Dhurandhar: The Revenge.

Industry Responses to Release Timing

Despite the excitement surrounding the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there are other films also vying for attention during this busy weekend. Notably, Bhai Tera Star Hai is targeting between 900 to 1000 screens, despite the competitive release landscape. Director Vivek B Agarwal commented that this weekend was the only suitable option until the end of February 2027 for releasing this particular film.

The release of multiple films at the same time prompts discussions regarding audience choices and potential over-saturation in the market. However, the unique appeal of a major Hollywood release such as Spider-Man further complicates this dynamic, as it tends to draw significant viewer interest and ticket sales.

As the release date approaches, the film’s producers and exhibitors remain vigilant in monitoring ticket sales and audience interest. The success or failure of these films will inevitably shape the future strategies of film releases in the Indian market.
