On July 27, Punjab Congress Members of Parliament organised a protest outside the Parliament, calling for the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The protest was sparked by allegations of paper leaks in the state and the police’s treatment of sanitation workers who were demonstrating in Barnala. The Congress party accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of failing to address the issue adequately.

Congress MP Amar Singh was vocal in his criticism of the AAP government, highlighting that the alleged mismanagement had affected numerous examinations within the state. According to Singh, at least four incidents of paper leaks occurred, which the government has denied. He articulated the consequences of these leaks and the injustices faced by sanitation workers advocating for higher wages.

The call for the Chief Minister’s resignation is underscored by the separate issue of police action against sanitation workers. These workers were on strike for better pay and regular job contracts when they reportedly faced violence from law enforcement. This has compounded the outrage among Congress leaders, who are pushing for accountability in both matters.

Accusations of Multiple Paper Leaks

The Congress party’s allegations extend beyond a single incident, as they claim that multiple paper leaks have occurred during the AAP administration. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also joined in the demand for resignations, specifically calling for the ousting of Punjab Education Minister Bains. They stated that six instances of paper leaks, including critical examinations like the Punjab Teacher Eligibility Test and Class 12 English exam, have had a significant negative impact on thousands of students in the region.

Despite these claims, the Punjab government has strongly countered the allegations. Health Minister Balbir Singh insisted that no paper leaks transpired under their watch. He defended the integrity of the government and suggested that the allegations were part of a politically motivated agenda from opposition parties lacking substantive evidence.

Singh’s statement highlighted the assertion from Chief Minister Mann, who allegedly confirmed that no paper leak had occurred during his tenure. Singh added, “Let someone name a single paper that was leaked.” This firm stance aims to dispel the claims made by the opposition and assert the government’s accomplishments.

Response from the Punjab Government

In response to the escalating situation, the Punjab government has taken steps to manage public unrest. Following the incidents involving sanitation workers, Deputy Superintendent of Police Satbir Singh Bains was suspended, indicating that the government is taking the concerns surrounding police behaviour seriously. Nonetheless, the administration maintains its position that it has upheld its promises to the public.

The government has consistently emphasised its achievements, arguing that previous administrations have not been as effective. Balbir Singh remarked on the fulfilment of promises made to the public, countering the opposition’s narrative by asserting that substantial improvements have been made in various sectors, including timely payments to women.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these allegations and protests will influence the political landscape in Punjab. The Congress party is rallying its base in response to perceived injustices, while the AAP government aims to quell dissent through communication and actions that reflect responsiveness to public concerns.
