The ‘Atmanirbhar Yatra Himachal Chapter’ workshop was held on July 27, 2026, at the Himachal Pradesh Secretariat, aiming to bolster the state’s startup ecosystem. Organised by the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology and Environment (HIMCOSTE) in collaboration with the Technology Development Board (TDB) of the Government of India, the event sought to connect researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs with vital industry stakeholders, funding agencies, and government institutions.

This workshop attracted a diverse group of participants, including scientists, startup founders, university representatives, and members from incubation centres, industries, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), self-help groups, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The primary focus was on transforming research and innovative concepts into commercially viable products while fostering an innovation-led economic framework in Himachal Pradesh.

Keynote speaker Suresh Atri, Environment Scientist at the Department of Environment, Science, Technology and Climate Change, outlined the initiative’s goals. He highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between scientific research and industry, enabling opportunities for innovators to commercialise their ideas. Atri stated that the Chief Minister aims to provide the right conditions for researchers in the state to turn innovative concepts into successful startups.

Commercialisation of Innovations as a Priority

Atri emphasised the role of the TDB in supporting technology-based startups through financial backing and mentorship. He noted that past funding had helped numerous successful Indian tech ventures, including those in the space sector. He also pointed out that despite a wealth of innovative ideas among young researchers, many projects struggle to reach the market due to insufficient industry connections.

“The challenge lies in linking these ideas with relevant industries and funding sources. This workshop serves as a crucial platform to facilitate that connection between laboratory innovations and commercial avenues,” Atri explained. HIMCOSTE aims to assist in patent applications, establish startup initiatives, and foster collaborations among universities and research institutions to create a robust innovation ecosystem.

Anshul Sharma, a student entrepreneur from IIT Mandi, shared insights regarding his startup’s AI-based Internet of Things (IoT) Landslide Monitoring System, developed as part of the workshop’s activities. He expressed gratitude for the guidance received on how to transition laboratory research into viable commercial products, noting that the system is already in collaboration with various government organisations.

Building Institutional and Industrial Partnerships

During the workshop, Sharma commented on the importance of learning about the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) framework and the processes involved in making an innovation market-ready. He highlighted how sessions facilitated understanding of public sector coordination and potential collaborations for startups.

Pushpendra Rana, Special Secretary and Member Secretary of the Department of Environment, Science, Technology and Climate Change, remarked that the workshop aimed to establish stronger institutional and industrial connections. This initiative is focused on facilitating the commercialisation of technologies developed in research labs to drive economic growth within the local community.

Rana reiterated the commitment of the Department of Environment, Science, Technology and Climate Change to support innovators with technical guidance, partnerships, and financial aid. He assured that any innovator looking to transition from lab to market could reach out for assistance, highlighting that these efforts are critical to fostering sustained economic development through innovation.
