The Gujarat government has introduced a new initiative aimed at transforming the traditional learning of mathematics. A government primary school in the Panchmahal district has launched a “Maths Park” designed to make mathematics enjoyable and accessible for students. This initiative allows children to grasp mathematical concepts through hands-on activities, games, and outdoor experiences, moving away from conventional classroom methods.

Components and Features of the Maths Park

The Maths Park at Nava Nadisar Primary School includes various activity-based learning spaces that feature distinct educational tools. Elements like number lines, abacuses, geometry models, and interactive games have been integrated into the park’s layout. These resources are intended to promote a blend of physical activity and mathematical understanding among students, enabling them to learn in a more engaging and relaxed environment.

Teacher Shantilal emphasised the importance of this innovative approach, stating that the park is designed to cater to every child’s learning needs. The initiative aims to encourage students to explore mathematical concepts in a fun and accessible manner, thus fostering a positive attitude towards the subject. Through engaging activities, the aim is to make mathematics not just easy but also enjoyable for all learners.

Feedback from students has been predominantly positive, indicating that the new learning approach has a significant impact on their educational experience. Darshana, a student at the school, remarked that the Maths Park enhances her learning by making complicated concepts easier to grasp while also adding an element of fun. Another student, Hardik, noted that the park aids him in understanding formulas and problem-solving effectively, reducing his reliance on external tuition.

Support and Leadership Behind the Initiative

The development of the Maths Park was facilitated by the collaborative efforts of local artisans and the school’s teaching staff, under the guidance of Principal Rakesh Patel. This partnership has contributed to the park’s creative design and practical features, ensuring that it meets the educational needs of students within the school.

Principal Patel shared that the initiative has notably altered students’ perceptions of mathematics. Previously, the subject was predominantly taught through textbooks and conventional lessons, which many students found burdensome. The introduction of the Maths Park has shifted the focus towards practical exploration and activity-based learning, helping to reframe mathematics as a more enjoyable and engaging discipline.

Nava Nadisar Primary School has been acknowledged as a PM SHRI Model School, highlighting its innovative teaching methodologies. This recognition underscores the effectiveness of experiential learning in increasing student engagement, enhancing understanding of concepts, and elevating the overall quality of education in government institutions.
