The CSR Journal Magazine

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai extended his congratulations to weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav following her accomplishment of securing a silver medal in the women’s 53kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. In his statement, the Chief Minister highlighted that her success has instilled pride not just in Chhattisgarh, but across India, and is expected to inspire a new generation to commit to sports.

Yadav, a 23-year-old athlete from Rajnandgaon, demonstrated her exceptional talent by lifting a total of 199kg, marking the best performance of her career. Chief Minister Sai remarked on Yadav’s dedication as emblematic of the growing sporting talent emerging from the state.

“The daughter of Rajnandgaon has shown that with dedication, discipline, and unwavering effort, success can be achieved on an international platform,” Sai noted. He further emphasised that this achievement extends beyond Yadav as an individual, serving as a tribute to the commitment and hard work of the citizens of Chhattisgarh.

Yadav’s Competitive Performance

In one of the most remarkable showcases during the weightlifting competition, Gyaneshwari Yadav equalled her personal best by lifting 88kg in the snatch. She then went on to lift a personal-best of 111kg in the clean and jerk segment. Her cumulative total of 199kg earned her the silver medal, finishing just behind Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih, who won gold with a record-setting total of 206kg.

Yadav briefly held the Commonwealth Games record for the clean and jerk after her successful lift of 111kg before Didih reclaimed the record with a final attempt of 113kg. Despite this, Yadav returned from Glasgow with new personal bests in both clean and jerk categories, as well as her overall total weight lifted.

The achievement not only underscores her individual talent but also marks a significant moment for the Indian weightlifting community. Both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao commended her performance, celebrating its implications for the future of sports in the state.

Government Initiatives to Enhance Sports Infrastructure

Chief Minister Sai reiterated his commitment to advancing the sports landscape within Chhattisgarh, stating that the state government aims to strengthen its sports infrastructure, enhance training facilities, and provide greater support for athletes. His remarks suggest an initiative to create conducive environments where talented individuals can thrive in national and international competitions.

Arun Sao, who also serves as the Deputy Chief Minister and holds the sports and youth welfare portfolio, affirmed these objectives, describing Yadav’s determination and hard work as a source of inspiration, particularly for young female athletes in the region. He echoed the Chief Minister’s vision of creating more opportunities for athletic excellence, emphasising the importance of supporting the youth in their sports endeavours.

The overall goal is to foster a robust sports culture that not only enables individuals like Yadav to shine but also enhances the state’s reputation in the sporting arena. As the state looks forward, the achievements of athletes like Gyaneshwari Yadav are viewed as pivotal in motivating more individuals to participate in competitive sports.
