Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi has expressed strong disapproval of the government’s approach following the North East National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak, highlighting the tragic loss of 21 students. During a session in the Lower House of Parliament on July 28, he specifically referenced the inappropriate reception given to former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan upon his resignation, likening it to a celebratory welcome for a war hero returning from battle.

Gogoi stated that instead of addressing pressing educational matters, the Prime Minister apparently prioritised social media engagement. He criticised the administration for allegedly neglecting to discuss critical issues related to educational integrity and paper leak incidents during the cabinet meetings.

He remarked, “The minister under whose watch 21 children lost their lives was welcomed back as though victorious in a conflict against Pakistan.” With this, he underscored the severity of the situation surrounding the NEET examination and its broader implications for the educational system.

Concerns Over Police Response to Protests

Continuing his address, Gogoi raised serious concerns regarding police actions taken during recent student protests. He claimed that the use of force, including pellet guns and tear gas, was inappropriate, questioning the authorisation behind such measures. The MP remarked on the resilience shown by students, despite the confrontations, indicating that they were undeterred by the violence employed against them.

Gogoi shared observations from the protests, delving into the emotional state of the participants. He described instances where young people expressed their frustrations openly, with one student reportedly asking the police to act against him. This highlighted a sense of defiance that he likened to historical figures known for their bravery.

He quoted several students who participated in the protests, mentioning that many did not disclose their actions to their parents due to fear of repercussions. His comments painted a picture of a generation willing to stand up for their rights, driven by a sense of injustice concerning the government’s handling of educational issues.

Call for Government Accountability

Gogoi further demanded accountability from the government, particularly from the Home Minister, regarding the police’s actions. He insisted that it is essential to address who authorised the aggressive tactics employed during the protests. “The bill in question has emerged because the police, dispatched by the Home Minister, failed to suppress the protests effectively,” Gogoi asserted.

In his statements, he accused the government of failing to protect the rights of the students and instead imposing violence, particularly against young women participating in the protests. He reiterated a desire for clarity and transparency from the authorities, emphasising that such an approach is necessary for restoring faith in the administration.
