Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that he has been in discussions regarding the ongoing flood crisis in various regions of Assam during a meeting with Members of Parliament from the state. The Prime Minister assured that the Union Government is working closely with the Assam administration to provide assistance to those impacted by the adverse conditions.

In a post shared on X, Modi expressed his concerns for the safety and welfare of the citizens affected by the floods. He remarked that the situation necessitates utmost attention and intervention, showcasing the collaborative efforts between the Centre and the state government in response to the calamity.

Conditions in Affected Areas

The flood situation has continued to deteriorate particularly in Sivasagar district, where floodwaters have reportedly inundated residences and roadways, impacting the lives of hundreds of families. Residents of Naujan village have been left struggling for basic necessities such as shelter, food, and clean drinking water while relief operations are being intensified.

Ahmed Ayubi, the Assam State President of Lok Janshakti Party, recently visited the inundated areas and characterised the circumstances in both Sivasagar and neighbouring Charaideo districts as “extremely bad.” He reported that local party workers are providing consistent support to families impacted by the floods.

Current Assessment of the Flood Situation

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the flood situation in the region remains critical, with the latest assessments indicating that over 4.45 lakh individuals have been affected across six districts, including Sivasagar and Charaideo. The ongoing relief efforts involve 184 camps and distribution centres, catering to nearly 28,700 residents currently displaced by the floods.

As of the latest reports, a total of 631 villages are under water, highlighting the extensive scale of the flooding. While there have been no confirmed human casualties reported thus far, the disaster has led to significant destruction of homes, infrastructure, agricultural land, and livestock throughout the impacted districts.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as they mobilise resources for relief operations. Access to clean drinking water is emerging as a pressing issue, despite government relief efforts reportedly reaching the affected villages. Measures are being taken to address these challenges while ensuring the safety of those impacted by the ongoing crisis.
