SRH Clinch Playoff Spot with Victory Over CSK in IPL 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

On May 18, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) delivered an impressive performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by five wickets in a thrilling Southern Derby encounter. Chasing a target of 181 runs, SRH accomplished the feat with six balls to spare, solidifying their playoff qualification alongside Gujarat Titans.

Initially grappling with early challenges, SRH found vital contributions from key players including Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen. Ishan Kishan also played a pivotal role, while Smaran Ravichandran’s decisive boundary sealed the match, marking a significant win for the team. The match took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, with the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, being the first to secure a playoff berth this season.

Match Breakdown

The match started with openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma providing a steady beginning, accumulating 15 runs without loss in the initial two overs. However, trouble arose in the third over when CSK’s pacer Mukesh Choudhary removed Travis Head for a mere six runs. Following this, Ishan Kishan teamed up with Abhishek, guiding SRH to 45/1 at the conclusion of the powerplay overs. Unfortunately, left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein dismissed Abhishek for a fighting 26 off 21 balls, leaving the visitors at 57/2 by the eighth over.

SRH tallied 75/2 by the end of the 10th over. Heinrich Klaasen and Kishan raised the team’s score with a series of boundaries, propelling SRH to 126/2 after 14 overs, needing only 55 runs from 36 balls. However, CSK’s Sanju Samson managed to stump Klaasen off Noor Ahmad’s bowling, with Klaasen scoring 47 runs in 26 deliveries. This dismissal led to a brief verbal exchange between the two players.

As the innings progressed, Ishan Kishan reached his half-century off 37 balls, placing SRH at 143/3 with only 38 runs required from 24 balls. Mukesh Choudhary claimed the wicket of Nitish Reddy in the 18th over, further putting SRH at 153/4. The 19th over saw Anshul Kamboj take the crucial wicket of Kishan, who contributed 70 runs off 47 balls. When Kishan was dismissed, SRH needed six runs from nine balls. On the final delivery of Kamboj’s over, Smaran Ravichandran struck a boundary, ensuring SRH’s five-wicket victory.

CSK’s Batting Efforts

Earlier in the match, SRH’s bowling attack, led by captain Pat Cummins, effectively restricted CSK to a total of 180/7. Cummins’ standout performance saw him take three wickets, supported by Sakib Hussain, who claimed two. Eshan Malinga also contributed with one wicket. After winning the toss, CSK opted to bat, with Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad opening the innings. Samson initiated a strong start, hitting a six off Nitish Reddy, as CSK collected 17 runs in the first over, the second-highest for the franchise.

Samson continued to dominate, hitting three consecutive fours off Praful Hinge in the subsequent over. SRH captain Cummins struck back, removing Samson for 27 runs and bringing Urvil Patel to the crease. Patel made an aggressive entrance but was dismissed by Sakib Hussain for 13 runs, leaving CSK at 57/2 at the end of the powerplay.

Following a vibrant start, CSK’s innings faltered, with Cummins dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad for 15 runs. Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube attempted to stabilize the innings, taking CSK to 132/4 after 15 overs. However, Eshan Malinga soon cleaned up Brevis for 44 runs. The bowling lineup for SRH restricted CSK greatly, with consistent deliveries ensuring CSK finished their innings at 180/7.
