SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav Claims Price of Petrol, Diesel to Increase Soon

The CSR Journal Magazine

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has alleged that the Central government is preparing to raise the prices of petrol and diesel. This assertion comes in the context of disruptions to the oil supply chain stemming from the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Yadav’s claims suggest that the financial difficulties faced by oil companies could result in higher fuel prices for consumers.

During a press conference in Lucknow on May 9, 2023, Yadav cited reports indicating that oil corporations are experiencing monthly losses of approximately Rs 30,000 crore. He argued that such losses will eventually lead to financial burdens transferred to the public, drawing parallels with previous hikes in gas cylinder prices.

Yadav stated, “The losses incurred by oil corporations will necessitate extracting more money from citizens, resembling previous trends in pricing.” He expressed his concern that these increases are imminent, as evidenced by recent newspaper reports that alluded to the situation.

Criticism of BJP’s Economic Policies

Yadav continued his criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that their policies reflect a capitalist ideology contrary to their claimed commitment to socialism. He questioned the foundational discussions within the BJP regarding its secular nature at the time of its formation.

He highlighted that the BJP originally presented itself as a party willing to embrace socialist principles but claimed they have diverged into capitalist practices over time. To reinforce his stance, Yadav mentioned the use of the image of Jayaprakash Narayan as part of their supposed socialist narrative, which he deems to be misleading.

His remarks indicate a broader criticism of the BJP’s approach to economic management and its impact on the average Indian citizen. The implications of rising fuel costs further play into perceived failures of the government in supporting the populace financially.

Review of Election Mechanisms and Transparency Issues

Akhilesh Yadav also raised concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process, particularly the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He alleged that these devices, along with other electronic technologies like smart meters, are prone to manipulation.

Addressing his party’s activists, he urged them to remain composed amid ongoing political turmoil over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. Yadav’s statements highlight his apprehensions regarding potential dishonesty in the electoral processes and called for maintaining discipline among party workers.

Previously, on May 7, 2023, Yadav challenged the Election Commission of India to provide CCTV footage from recent voting in West Bengal, asserting that transparency is crucial for democratic integrity. His concerns about democratic procedures reflect a broader critique aimed at the BJP in light of the recently held West Bengal assembly polls, where he accused the party of suppressing voters.

Yadav emphasised, “If the Supreme Court’s proceedings can be live-streamed, then the public deserves access to the CCTV footage of electoral proceedings.” His call for accountability seeks to bolster democratic norms during a contentious period in Indian politics.
