Sonam Wangchuk marked the 26th day of his demonstration at Jantar Mantar, focusing on the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. During this time, he made a heartfelt appeal to his supporters, underscoring his unwavering commitment to non-violence. Concerns arose over sporadic incidents where groups allegedly attempted to incite violence outside the primary protest area.

Wangchuk strongly urged participants to exercise complete restraint in reaction to any provocations and to uphold the values of peaceful protest. He expressed deep concern regarding attempts by antisocial elements to exploit the situation, stating that these actions could undermine the integrity of their movement.

In a message shared on X, he articulated, “DAY 26 PEACE & ONLY PEACE IS MY WAY.” He emphasised the importance of maintaining a peaceful atmosphere at Jantar Mantar, despite the troubling reports from other locations regarding provocation and hostility. Wangchuk insisted that any response to aggression should embody peaceful principles, symbolically described as responding with “flowers.”

Wangchuk’s Health and Commitment to Protest

Wangchuk’s commitment to the protest remains steadfast, even as he undergoes treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, following his transfer from Safdarjung Hospital. According to the medical team, his condition is stable and he remains alert, with vital parameters within acceptable ranges.

The hospital released a statement confirming that Wangchuk is being attended to by a multidisciplinary team and receiving treatment in accordance with his informed consent. His health condition remains unchanged, a fact noted as he continues with his protest for justice.

On Thursday, Wangchuk reiterated that he would end his hunger strike only upon receiving a firm assurance from the government that no punitive actions would be taken against fellow protesters who participated in the ‘Chalo Sansad’ agitation. This statement revealed his priorities are not just for his health, but for the safety of others involved in the movement.

Fasting and Demands for Protesters’ Safety

Wangchuk’s video message on X documented his experience of losing 11 kilograms during his fast, which has now extended over numerous days. Despite this significant weight loss, he expressed gratitude towards the students who peacefully protested, even in the face of violence from law enforcement.

He articulated his desire for government assurance on the treatment of students, highlighting that many had faced physical confrontations during protests. His specific demand includes ensuring that students will not face accusations, FIRs, or legal consequences that could lead to intimidation or threats of police action.

Wangchuk concluded by firmly stating that if he receives a satisfactory assurance from the authorities regarding the protection of the students, he would consider breaking his fast. However, if such assurance does not materialise, he feels compelled to continue his hunger strike in solidarity with those he advocates for.
