Son Arrested For Allegedly Killing Mother In Kannur Following Heated Argument

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 30-year-old man has been apprehended following the alleged murder of his mother during a conflict at their home in Peravoor, Kannur, on the night of April 21. The victim, identified as 53-year-old Mattathilparambil Geethamma, hailed from Thanikunnu and had been a member of the district committee for the Mahila Morcha. Local police confirmed that the incident took place between 8 pm and 9 pm.

The accused, Christy, reportedly used a knife to stab Geethamma in the neck inside their residence’s bedroom. Officials have indicated that the motive behind this violent act was anger stemming from derogatory remarks reportedly made about Geethamma in the local area.

Inspector Ithihas Thaha of the Kelakom Police Station confirmed that Christy subsequently surrendered to authorities at the police station. Officers have initiated a case against him under Section 103(1) for murder as defined by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An ongoing investigation aims to gather more details surrounding the incident.

Legal Proceedings Related to a Separate Case

In an unrelated matter, the Additional District Court-IV in Thalassery is expected to deliver its ruling on April 25 concerning anticipatory bail applications made by two doctors linked to the death of a first-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student. The accused, identified as MK Ram and KT Sangeeta Nambiar, have been charged under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The prosecution, represented by Public Prosecutor K Ajith Kumar, contends that the accused are not eligible for anticipatory bail given the severity of the allegations under the PoA Act. The court has been presented with a sequence of events purportedly supported by CCTV footage collected by police, which allegedly contradicts Dr. Ram’s claims regarding his whereabouts during the incident.

It has been reported that CCTV footage shows Dr. Ram present in the adjacent staff room while Nithin Raj was questioned in the principal’s chamber concerning a loan application issue. The prosecution asserts that Dr. Ram left the staff room several times to monitor the ongoing situation and allegedly congratulated a teacher associated with the matter, reportedly offering assistance in lodging a complaint with the cyber cell.

Family Background and Allegations

The case has drawn significant attention due to the tragic nature of Nithin Raj’s death, which the family claims was a premeditated act rather than suicide. LY Raj, Nithin’s father, and brother-in-law MS Ashok were in attendance at the court hearing. They expressed that the college authorities must share responsibility for his demise, asserting that their son faced hostile treatment from the accused.

The family’s lawyer, Vinod Ragavan, has been vocal about their stance, while the defence attorney, V Jaikrishnan, has presented counter-arguments in court. The accusations include claims that Dr. Ram’s alleged derogatory remarks and conduct led to extreme distress for Nithin Raj, prompting the family’s belief that his death resulted from calculated actions.

The court’s ruling on the anticipatory bail applications is pending as it considers the evidence presented, including testimonies from fellow students who claimed Dr. Ram had demeaned Nithin Raj during their interactions.
