India Blocks Over 3,700 Apps and Flags 32 Lakh Mule Accounts in Cybercrime Crackdown

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian government has recently taken significant steps to combat cybercrime by blocking 3,718 mobile applications, which include various fraudulent loan apps. This initiative, reported by the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Lok Sabha, is part of a broader effort facilitated by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) in association with different governmental and technological entities.

Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, highlighted that approximately Rs 11,158 crore related to cyber fraud has been safeguarded through the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) as of June 30, 2026. This system has reportedly enabled the registration of 32.80 lakh complaints regarding cybercrime to date.

The CFCFRMS serves a crucial role, allowing authorities to collaborate effectively with banks, payment gateways, and financial institutions to halt or freeze suspicious transactions promptly following a reported fraud. This coordinated approach aims to enhance operational efficiency in responding to cyber threats.

Identification of Suspected Mule Accounts

As part of this comprehensive strategy, the government has intensified its focus on detecting and addressing mule bank accounts that cybercriminals allegedly utilise to disguise and channel stolen funds. The Ministry has identified approximately 32.08 lakh suspected mule accounts, with transactions amounting to Rs 25,698 crore reportedly intercepted as a direct result of these efforts.

Furthermore, authorities have acted to block around 15.75 lakh mobile SIM cards and 5.77 lakh IMEI numbers believed to be associated with suspected cybercriminal activities. These actions are designed to restrict the ability of criminals to use fraudulent connections and devices in their operations.

The Ministry of Home Affairs is also implementing a new Standard Operating Procedure for the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and the CFCFRMS, aimed at streamlining complaint resolution. By enhancing coordination among agencies, it seeks to expedite the freezing and restoration of funds lost to fraud.

New Measures for Complaint Resolution and Awareness Campaigns

In April 2026, two new modules were introduced: the Money Restoration Module, intended to facilitate the return of recovered funds to victims, and the Grievance Redressal Module, which monitors complaints that have seen delays in resolution. This dual approach aims to enhance both efficiency and transparency in the handling of fraud cases.

The NCRP allows citizens to report various cyber offences, including online financial fraud, fake investment schemes, sextortion, identity theft, and related scams. Additionally, individuals can access support by calling the dedicated helpline at 1930 for matters regarding financial cyber fraud.

To complement these measures, the government has intensified its cyber awareness campaigns through multiple channels, including SMS, television, radio advertisements, and digital platforms. Awareness initiatives have also been extended to public venues like railway stations and schools as well as during significant events such as the IPL, aiming to educate citizens on recognising and preventing cyber threats.

The I4C serves a pivotal role as the central agency coordinating the nation’s response to cybercrime. It collaborates with state governments, law enforcement, banks, financial institutions, and tech companies to create a cohesive defense against the rising tide of cybercriminal activities.

As digital payment systems such as UPI and internet banking become more prevalent, cybercriminals are increasingly resorting to sophisticated tactics like fake investment schemes and OTP fraud. The current government strategy not only focuses on blocking fraudulent applications but also on disrupting the financial networks that facilitate such crimes, all while improving the frameworks for victim support and recovery.
