The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant aviation emergency took place at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi during the early hours of April 26, involving Swiss Air Flight LX147, which was operating a route from Delhi to Zurich. Smoke was reportedly seen coming from the left wheel of the aircraft as it attempted to take off around 2 am. The crew acted swiftly, halting the take-off procedure and declaring an emergency.

Reports indicate that the flight was carrying a total of 232 passengers. In the process of evacuating the aircraft, four individuals sustained minor injuries as they exited via emergency slides. Prompt action by the crew ensured the safety of all passengers aboard.

Response from Airport Authorities

The authorities at Delhi Airport, in response to the incident, stated that all standard safety protocols were activated following the emergency declaration. In a message posted on X, the Airport confirmed that emergency services were mobilised and that the situation was handled efficiently. They assured the public that other airport operations continued without disruption.

At approximately 2:06 am, the airport’s fire department was notified of a “full hydraulic emergency,” prompting the dispatch of five fire tenders to the aircraft’s location on Runway 28, designated for nighttime operations. The fire services worked quickly to manage the situation on the ground.

By around 3:30 am, the aircraft’s situation had been brought under control, and its safe landing was successfully executed. The swift response from the emergency team contributed significantly to preventing further complications.

Context of Previous Incidents

This incident follows a previous emergency situation involving an IndiGo flight, which made an emergency landing at the same airport on March 28. The IndiGo flight was reportedly coming from Visakhapatnam to Delhi when it encountered engine failure issues, prompting the crew to declare an emergency. The Delhi Fire Service responded promptly to that incident as well.

These occurrences have raised awareness regarding aviation safety at major airports in India, as both incidents involved timely actions by crew members and emergency responders to safeguard passengers. Authorities continue to monitor aviation safety protocols and ensure proper training for emergency situations.

The response to incidents at airports remains a critical aspect of ensuring the safety of passengers. Adequate preparedness, effective communication, and prompt action are vital components in managing such emergencies, underscoring the importance of structured safety processes in aviation operations.
