Shakira Prepares for Landmark Free Concert on Copacabana Beach

The CSR Journal Magazine

Colombian singer Shakira is set to perform a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on the evening of May 6, 2026. City officials have projected that the event will attract around two million attendees to the iconic beach, which is renowned for hosting major entertainment events. This performance is part of her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” world tour, supporting her upcoming album. Shakira expressed her enthusiasm about the concert, stating it could be the pinnacle of her career.

In an interview with Brazil’s TV Globo, Shakira described singing on Copacabana Beach as a lifelong dream. She conveyed her affection for the venue, which she described as a ‘magical place.’ The artist noted that she had prioritised learning Portuguese before English, further showcasing her connection to Brazil.

Cultural Connection and Historical Success

Shakira’s relationship with Brazil spans decades, dating back to her initial success in the 1990s. Felipe Maia, an ethnomusicologist, highlighted that her charm and deep connections with Brazilian audiences were crucial to her achievements in the country. He commented on how the cultural similarities between Colombia and Brazil contributed to her popularity and how the forthcoming concert symbolises the enduring bond between the artist and her Brazilian fans.

On the day of the concert, many eager attendees began gathering at Copacabana Beach early in the morning to secure prime viewing spots. Vendors set up shops around the area, selling food, drinks, and various necessities like toilet paper and even bags of sand to enhance the experience for concertgoers.

The entertainment will commence in the late afternoon with various DJs performing, building excitement ahead of Shakira’s set, which is scheduled for 9:45 p.m. local time and is anticipated to last two hours. Following her performance, another DJ will take over to keep the lively atmosphere while facilitating an orderly dispersal of the crowd.

Boosting Economy Through Cultural Events

The free concert aligns with Rio de Janeiro’s City Hall initiatives aimed at stimulating economic activity following the Carnival and New Year celebrations, and with upcoming events such as the month-long Saint John’s Day festivities in June. Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere underscored the importance of such events for the city’s economy, referencing a belief that cultural activities generate significant job opportunities and revenue.

Cavaliere shared that the financial investment in the concert is expected to yield returns significantly exceeding the initial costs, estimating a potential profit of up to 40 times the expenditure. According to a study conducted by Rio’s City Hall alongside Riotur, the concert could generate approximately 777 million reais (around $155 million) due to increased tourism and spending in local businesses. The anticipation surrounding this event has reportedly attracted many tourists from both Brazil and international destinations.

Data from City Hall indicated that tourist arrivals in Rio increased during prior concert years, showcasing positive growth in visitor numbers. In 2024, a notable 34.2 per cent increase was recorded compared to the previous year, while 2025 saw an impressive jump of 90.5 per cent. Initial reports from Airbnb also indicated a surge in reservations from guests travelling from various regions, including Europe, indicating strong interest in the upcoming concert.
