Roadshow for Rape Accused Out on Bail Sparks Outrage in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad

The CSR Journal Magazine

A roadshow allegedly held in support of Sushil Prajapati, a recently released rape accused, has generated significant controversy in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. His release on bail has drawn widespread scrutiny, particularly as videos of supporters celebrating his return have circulated on social media. Prajapati, a former city president of a local Hindu Yuva Vahini unit, was greeted by a throng of supporters outside the jail with garlands and chants, marking his freedom nearly nine months post-arrest.

Details of the Allegation

The legal troubles commenced when a woman, an LLB student from Modinagar, filed a rape complaint at Muradnagar police station on August 8, 2025, against Prajapati. In her statement, she claimed that he lured her by assuring assistance in securing a chamber at the Ghaziabad court and guidance in her legal career. Their initial meeting occurred in November 2021 while she was engaged in law studies under a senior advocate at the Meerut court.

The woman further alleged that during a visit to the Ghaziabad court, Prajapati convinced her to accompany him to a flat in a Thar SUV. She accused him of mixing an intoxicating substance in a beverage and subsequently raping her. According to her report, Prajapati threatened her with death if she disclosed the incident before abandoning her in a remote area and escaping.

Following the lodging of the FIR, authorities had offered a reward of Rs 25,000 for information leading to Prajapati’s capture. He was apprehended on August 11, 2025, and was incarcerated until his recent release on bail on May 17, 2026.

Police Response to Celebratory Procession

The police have acknowledged the troubling nature of the celebratory roadshow that unfolded after Prajapati’s bail. Officers have reported that they are currently investigating the viral videos depicting supporters showering him with flowers and participating in a convoy of vehicles. Senior police officer Surendra Nath Tiwari stated that action would be taken as necessary once the enquiry is complete, emphasising the department’s commitment to addressing any unlawful activities associated with the procession.

This incident has elicited memories of protests that erupted during Prajapati’s previous arrest. At that time, supporters and individuals from various organisations gathered at the Muradnagar police station, allegedly causing significant disruption. The ongoing developments demonstrate the complexities surrounding public support for the accused and the impact of such support on community sentiment and legal proceedings.

Authorities in Ghaziabad are under pressure to address the situation carefully, balancing the rights of the individual awaiting trial with the concerns of the community about such a public show of solidarity with a rape accused. The police’s prompt engagement with the situation via an investigation indicates their awareness of the broader implications surrounding the case.

Public Reaction and Ongoing Implications

The public response to the incident has been varied, with many expressing outrage over the perceived celebration of an accused individual. The roadshow has sparked discussions regarding societal attitudes toward sexual assault allegations and the treatment of victims versus that of the accused. Furthermore, the celebration of Prajapati’s release raises questions about the societal norms surrounding bail and public support for individuals facing serious criminal charges.

As the situation develops, it is crucial for the police and local authorities to navigate the complexities of public sentiment while ensuring adherence to legal processes. The case continues to generate attention, highlighting ongoing issues within the criminal justice system and the societal responses to allegations of gender-based violence. Moving forward, the outcomes of the police investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings will be closely monitored by both the media and the public.
