All schools and higher educational institutions in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, will be closed from August 4 to August 12, 2026, due to the ongoing Kanwar Yatra. The closure aims to ensure the safety of students during this period when there is expected to be a significant increase in the movement of pilgrims throughout the district.

This directive was issued by the District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) on August 3, following instructions from the District Magistrate. The decision acknowledges the need to maintain safety and manage the flow of people during this annual pilgrimage.

The order specifically applies to all educational institutions, including those affiliated with various boards such as the Basic Education Board, Secondary Education Board, CBSE, ICSE, and others recognised by the state. This comprehensive closure affects all classes ranging from Nursery to Class 12.

Exams to Continue as Scheduled

While educational institutions will be closed, the order allows for the continuation of examinations that have already been planned. Colleges, universities, and technical institutions, whether government or private, are included in this directive; however, they may proceed with any scheduled examinations based on their established timetables.

The provision for examinations is crucial, as many students are preparing for important assessments. Therefore, institutions engaged in examinations are expected to facilitate these while adhering to the broader closure directive.

Additionally, the closure will be in effect during the observance of Shravan Shivratri on August 11, a significant date for devotees. Authorities anticipate that this day will draw considerable crowds of Kanwar pilgrims to various locations across the district.

Safety Measures and Compliance

The local administration has urged all educational institutions to strictly comply with the imposed closure order. The authorities recognise the necessity for adequate arrangements during this holiday period to ensure the safety and security of students and the general public.

Kanwar Yatra, a prominent Hindu pilgrimage, involves the movement of devotees, particularly those carrying sacred water from the Ganges River to offer at Shiva shrines. The pilgrimage typically sees substantial traffic, which can affect normal activities in the area.

In light of the anticipated influx of pilgrims, educational institutions have been instructed to coordinate with local authorities, ensuring that necessary precautions are in place. This includes providing information and support to families regarding the extended break.
