Rhiya Ahir, a 27-year-old model, has gained significant attention after videos of her confronting a Mumbai Police van during a protest went viral. The incident occurred as part of a demonstration organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Shivaji Park, where protesters were demanding the release of individuals detained by the police. Ahir stated that her family supported her actions, while her friends described her as a ‘baddie’ for her bravery.

The protest was primarily triggered by allegations surrounding the NEET paper leak, which has led to substantial dissatisfaction among students. Ahir, who was not personally acquainted with any of the arrested individuals, felt compelled to act upon witnessing how they were being treated. She expressed surprise at becoming a prominent figure within the protest movement, emphasising that her actions were driven purely by instinct.

Describing the moment she intervened, Ahir recounted seeing women among those confined in the police vehicle. Despite attempts to remove a woman from the van, the police prevented her. In response, she stood resolutely in front of the van, demanding the detainees’ release while resisting the officer’s attempts to intimidate her by revving the engine of the vehicle.

Emotion and Determination Fuel Her Actions

Ahir’s involvement in the protest was notable, especially as she had never participated in such an event before. She first arrived at Shivaji Park on July 21, 2026, after following the events surrounding the student movements in Delhi. However, her initial arrival was timed such that she witnessed the police beginning their detentions. Upon returning the next day, Ahir became involved in the now infamous confrontation that has since captured widespread attention on social media platforms.

Coming from a defence background, Ahir’s father served in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Her family’s military history contributed to her sense of courage during the protest. She remarked on the influence of her upbringing, suggesting that her bravery stemmed from her family’s engagement in service, indicating that courage was likely ingrained in her character.

Further explaining her motivations, Ahir pointed to her experiences within the education system as a catalyst for her protest involvement. As a psychology student who was unable to complete her graduation due to professional commitments, she is currently pursuing a degree in English Literature through distance education at Mumbai University. Despite having paid for her course, she has faced challenges in communication with the university, finding many official numbers unreachable and receiving minimal feedback.

Broader Implications Beyond NEET Exams

Ahir articulated that her motivation for joining the protests extended beyond the NEET exams themselves, highlighting a broader dissatisfaction with the education system. She emphasized the need to address systemic issues rather than a singular problem. These frustrations were compounded by her experiences and interactions with the institutional framework, which she feels have been inadequate.

In addition to her modelling career, Ahir has been involved in Hindi theatre for over a decade. Last year, she initiated a project named Riyasat, which connects local artisans with potential buyers. This endeavour was inspired by her discontent with perceived injustices in the fashion industry, exemplified by controversies such as Prada’s design appropriation of Kolhapuri chappals. Through her diverse interests, Ahir continues to advocate for meaningful change while navigating her personal and professional aspirations.
