Railway Employee Arrested for Alleged Rape of Daughter-in-Law in Lucknow

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 58-year-old railway employee has been taken into custody in Lucknow for allegedly raping his daughter-in-law. Charges against him include dowry harassment, physical assault, and criminal intimidation, involving not only him but also his three children, including the woman’s husband. The survivor has reported a pattern of abuse that began shortly after her marriage.

The survivor recounted a distressing account of her life since marrying her husband in November 2023, claiming her family spent approximately Rs 55 lakh on the wedding. She stated that on the very first night of her marriage, she was allegedly coerced by her two sisters-in-law to consume alcohol and smoke a cigarette. Her refusal met with violent threats, leading to significant health issues.

According to her, the environment in her marital home was hostile. She claimed that her husband and sisters-in-law frequently organised parties attended by their friends, ignoring her objections. When she sought assistance from her father-in-law regarding the incessant celebrations, he reportedly dismissed her concerns, claiming such behaviour was commonplace among affluent families.

Return to Marital Home and Allegations of Rape

The woman mentioned that after a brief stay at her parents’ residence, she returned to her marital home in April 2024. However, her situation did not improve, and she alleged that she was once again compelled to drink alcohol. It was during one of these intoxicated states that she claims her father-in-law raped her.

The survivor asserted that she was confined in her home for three days by her husband and in-laws, which left her feeling trapped and desperate. Ultimately, she managed to reach out for help by contacting the police, who swiftly arrived at the scene to rescue her.

Initially, the police registered a case under sections related to molestation against the primary accused. However, as the investigation progressed and stronger evidence came to light, the charges were updated to include rape. This change reflects the seriousness of the allegations brought forth by the complainant.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

The main suspect, a senior section engineer with the Indian Railways, had evaded arrest until Saturday morning when law enforcement apprehended him based on information from informants. His arrest marks a critical development in the case as the police continue to investigate the allegations made by the woman against multiple individuals.

Authorities are now working to gather further evidence concerning the claims of abuse and intimidation that extend beyond the alleged rape. The arrest has sparked a discussion about the broader issues of domestic violence and harassment, particularly within affluent families.

The ongoing case has raised awareness regarding the importance of addressing such crimes seriously to support victims. As investigations continue, law enforcement is committed to ensuring justice is served while also taking steps to provide the necessary support to the survivor involved in this distressing incident.
